Title: Lab exercise 2

1
Lab exercise 2
  • Introduction

2
The human organism
  • The study of anatomy and physiology go hand in
    hand
  • Anatomy is the study of structure (what it looks
    like)
  • Physiology is the study of function (what is
    does).

3
Major body cavities-Procedure A
  • http//www.studystack.com/flashcard-2851
  • Your task is to learn the names of the major body
cavities and divisions within them AND what
    organs lie within
  • You will also learn the names of the layers of
serous membrane that line these cavities

4
Cavities
Cranial cavity
Thoracic cavity
Spinal cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
5
Cavities anterior view
cranial
pleural
pericardial
abdominal
Pelvic
6
Procedure B Organ Systems
  • The human body has 11 organ systems, but none of
    them function independently.
  • Organ systems are composed of more than one cell
    type
  • http//peer.tamu.edu/curriculum_modules/OrganSyste
    ms/index.htm
  • know the 11 organ systems and be able to
recognize which organ goes into which system (and
    which cavity)

7
Procedure C-Relative position and directional
terms
  • What is the Anatomical position?
    http//mywebpages.comcast.net/wnor/terminologyanat
    position.htm
  • Directional terms and/or relative position is
useful for providing uniformity in describing the
locations of one body part to another
  • http//www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?ob
    jIDAP15305

8
Procedure C-Planes and Sections
  • The body can be divided into 3 planes
  • The horizontal (transverse) plane divides the
body into superior and inferior sections
  • The sagittal plane divides the body into left and
right sections (mid-sagittal is equal sides,
    para-sagittal is unequal sides)
  • The coronal (frontal) plane divides the body into
    anterior and posterior sections
  • http//training.seer.cancer.gov/module_anatomy/uni
    t1_3_terminology2_planes.html
  • http//medinfo.ufl.edu/year1/rad6190/planes_sectio
    n.shtml

9
Procedure C-Regions and Quadrants
  • The abdominopelvic area is divided into 9 regions
    or 4 quadrants
  • http//www.quia.com/ws/482717.html
  • http//www.studystack.com/studytable-23979
  • http//www.studystack.com/studytable-23552
  • learn both types of organization and recognize
the main organs found in each
  • this helps the physician to pinpoint a patients
particular complaint. (pain in lower right
    quadrant could indicate an appendicitis)

10
9 Regions
Right hypochondriac
epigastric
Left hypochondriac
Right lumbar
umbilical
Left lumbar
Left iliac

Quizzes
  • Dont forget there will be a 10 point quiz over
    each lab
  • This is given at the end of the period over what
    you cover each day
  • The quizzes begin today!
