- The human being was placed at the center of Greek
culture. - The Greeks encouraged all forms of art.
- Proportion, balance and unity were key Greek
ideals - The human body was considered beautiful and
perfectly proportioned.

- Predecessor of Kritios Boy
- Rigid standing figures of young men and women (
Kouros was Male) - The life-size statues represented an ideal
athlete. - Stylized and did not represent real people.
- The female was called Kore- freestanding, clothed
figure of an idealized young girl.
16Define contrapposto
- Technique of sculpting a human figure in a pose
that shows the weight of the body in balance.
With weight on one leg, the shoulders and hips
counterbalance each other in a natural way so
that the figure does not fall over. - The Archaic period comes to a close in about 480
BC.

- Temple of Athena
- Originally was painted in bright colors.
- Rectangular in shape
- Generally the public were not allowed in side the
temples. - Parthenon was used as a temple, a church during
the Christian movement, a Turkish Mosque ( Used
to store ammunition) - Marble was grinded down to make concrete later
on. - Metal was melted to make weapons
