  • Predecessor of Kritios Boy
  • Rigid standing figures of young men and women (
    Kouros was Male)
  • The life-size statues represented an ideal
    athlete.
  • Stylized and did not represent real people.
  • The female was called Kore- freestanding, clothed
    figure of an idealized young girl.

Define contrapposto
  • Technique of sculpting a human figure in a pose
    that shows the weight of the body in balance.
    With weight on one leg, the shoulders and hips
    counterbalance each other in a natural way so
    that the figure does not fall over.
  • The Archaic period comes to a close in about 480
    BC.

  • Parthenon was used as a temple, a church during
    the Christian movement, a Turkish Mosque ( Used

  • Marble was grinded down to make concrete later
    on.
  • Metal was melted to make weapons

survived?

Why have so few Greek statues survived?
  • Many were melted down for ammunition or war
    weapons. Some were lost or destroyed in other
    ways.
