SONGKRAN
  • Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which
starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3
days At this time, people from the rural areas
who are working in the city usually return home
to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time
comes, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted
city. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as
people believe that water will wash away bad
    luck.

SONGKRAN'S ACTIVITIES

  • Songkran festival is to provide the
opportunity for family members to gather in order
to express their respects to the elders by
pouring scented water onto the hands of their
parents and grandparents The elders in return
wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity.

of the twelfth lunar month which usually falls on
some day in November when the water level is high
and the climate is cooler. Participants ask water
spirits to sail away their troubles in their
    krathongs, which are containers traditionally
made from banana leaves and carrying offerings of
incense, lotus flowers and small money.
  • The festival of Loy Krathong is a time to pay our
respects and apologies to the Goddess of Water by
    floating candles and joss sticks.

THAI TEMPLES
In Thailand, around 30,000 Buddhist temples are
consecrated. Thai Temples have architectural
differences in all Thailand areas
Northeastern style
Burmese Style
Northern style
Bangkok style
29
The famous temple
Wat Phra Kaew (??????????), the Temple of the
Emerald Buddha, and the adjoining Grand Palace
together
There's a distinct contrast in style between the
very Thai Wat Phra Kaew and the more European
inspired designs of the Grand Palace (the roof
being the exception). The Grand Palace is
nowadays used only for occasional ceremonial
purposes and is no longer the royal residence.
Grand Palace
30
The Emerald Buddha
  • Judging from the appearance and style one
could conclude it was carved in Northern Thailand
not much earlier than the fifteenth century.

The ceremonial changing of the costumes takes
place three time a year, Summer ,Rainy and Winter
and is done by his Majesty the King.

Khon
Khon, a performance of which acting and dancing
are combined
Main characteristic of KHON is that the
performers, except angle, leading male and female
performers, have to wear masks.
The dialogues and songs for KHON actors are all
recited and sung by a cheracha man ( a person
who speaks out the dialogues for the performers).
Stories for the drama are based exclusively on
the Ramakien, the Thai version of an Indian epic.

Thai dance
Thai traditional dance is one of the truly
graceful aspects of the country and is quite
symbolic of the Thai character itself. It was
originally developed and performed as
entertainment for the royal court
  • The form is very strict, employing 108
basic movements and keeping the body upright from
the neck to the hips, moving up and down using
only the knees, and stretching to the rhythm of
    the music.

41
Thai Boxing
  • Thai boxing or "MUAY THAI" (??????). Boxers may
strike the body by using fists, elbows, shins or
    knees.

At the beginning and end of the fight, the two
fighters are making a dance, called LAM MUAI
THAI" (????????). This ceremony is made to thank
their teacher and the spirits ("WAI KRU"
Before the beginning of the fight and during the
warm up, the fighters are wearing flowers
garlands.
During all the fight there is always live Thai

His Majesty Kings Theory
  • The New Theory is the method to achieve
self-sufficiency, as the means to manage land and
water resources for agriculture and consumption.
The theory applies to small farmers holding an
average cultivation area, to maximize the use of
their land, with the aim for them to be able to
support themselves adequately in the first place.
This will lead to organizations such as farmers
groups or cooperatives to jointly carry out
community activities. At the same time, they must
be able to coordinate and connect with outside
    organizations and agencies concerning capital
source to support occupational and peoples
    quality of life development.
