• May be beneficial clonidine, ethanol

• Adverse drug-nutrient interactions
• MAO inhibitors Nardil, Marplan Parnate
• Used infrequently but interaction is profound
• Interaction with drugs (nasal decongestants)
• Interaction with tyramine containing foods
• Cheese, wine and some preserved fish and meats
• Mechanism inhibits the metabolism of tyramine
  (drugs)
• May cause hypertensive crisis

• Disulfiram reaction
• Disulfiram, metronidazole, nitrofurantoin,
  quinacrine, sulfonylureas
• Inhibits the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetate
  
• Symptoms Flushing, throbbing head and neck, NV,
  cardiac symptoms (chest pain, palpitations,
  tachycardia), hypotension

• Management 4 suggestions
• Give intravenously
• Hold enteral feeding before and after dose
• Change patient to bolus feedings and schedule
  around doses
• Give an alternate drug carbamazepine or
  doxycycline
