Multi-Purpose Dry Lubricant
  • Definition - means any lubricant which is (A)
designed and labeled to provide lubricity by
depositing a thin film of graphite, molybdenum
    disulfide (moly), or polytetrafluoroethylene or
    closely related fluoropolymer (teflon) on
surfaces, and (B) designed for general purpose
lubrication, or for use in a wide variety of
    applications.
  • Deposited film must be dry.
  • Deposited film consists of lubricating agent only
or a coating that contains the specialty
    lubricating agent.

Multi-Purpose Dry Lubricant
  • Product descriptor Multi-Purpose is a paradox.
  • The products have unique applications and must be
evaluated independent of each other and other
    multi-purpose lubricants.
  • Non-coating versions must not contain solvent
carriers that can damage painted surfaces.
  • Coating versions must be formulated according to
the solvent requirements of the coating systems.

4
Summary
  • Category needs solvents to effectively deliver
    lubricating agent.
  • If VOC limitations render product ineffective, it
essentially would destroy the product category.
  • The options for meeting the proposed requirements
are very limited. LVP solvents do not dry and
    have limited utility in coatings.
  • Entire category presents only minimal mass-based
    VOC gains.
  • Reactivity limits could be considered for the
    coating type products.

Requirements
  • Cleaners must be flammable and meet EPA fuel
    additive requirements.
  • Carburetor and fuel system/air intake cleaners
are used primarily by professional mechanics.
  • Users want a product that cleans well, cleans
    fast, dries quick.
  • Cleaners are used on both standard carburetor and
    fuel injected systems.
  • Forceful spray helps cleaning.
  • High solvency is required where physical contact
    is limited.
