Some facts of Finland
  • An independent republic since 6.12.1917
  • In area the fifth largest country in Europe
  • Population 5.277 300 million(http//www.stat.fi/t
    il/asan.html), people over 65 years today 16 ,
    but in 2030 approx. 26
  • Official languages Finnish (93 ) and Swedish
    (6 )
  • The most important eyediseases cataract,
    glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic
    retinopathy

The changes in Finnish health care in 1990s
  • Less beds
  • Less beddays
  • Average time of treatment is shortened
  • Most of the patients are transferred home after
    the treatment,they are so called day surgery
    patients

Ophthalmic nursing education in Finland
  • Since 1987 in the curriculum of nursing no
    compulsory studies on ophthalmic nursing, only a
    few medical lectures or ophthalmic nursing
    integrated in other subjects
  • The Finnish higher education system universities
    and polytechnics. Polytechnics are more
    practically oriented. They were created gradually
    over the 1990s.

  • with the Finnish Federation of Nurses
  • The purpose To develop ophthalmic nursing and to
    promote the ophthalmic nursing profession

Ophthalmic nursing education in Finland
  • Only 1 credit of ophthalmic nursing is offered as
    optional studies in some of polytechnics
  • A special ophthalmic programme of 10 weeks for 15
    nurses was arranged by a polytechnic in 1999, and
    20 weeks special course in Tampere 2005
  • What of the future? How to transfer the know-how
    to younger colleagues?

  • To organize and support studies and education
    programmes e.g. by arranging professional study
    days (In Tampere-house, Tampere 28-29.9.2007)
  • To support research activities by giving awards
  • To provide information and publish an ophthalmic
    nursing journal called Silmähoitaja (The
    Ophthalmic Nurse)
  • To prepare statements by expertise
  • To cooperate with national and international
  • organizations

    nurses working at university central hospital (5)
    or central hospital
  • Nowadays many of our members are working in
    private hospitals
