  • Volume is the amount of space an object takes up
  • Regular objects have even surfaces and even edges
  • Some examples of regular objects are cubes,
    aquarium tanks, blocks, etc
  • What tools are needed to measure the volume of
    regular objects?
  • A ruler and the formula for volume (V L x W x
    H)
  • The volume of a regular object is measured in cm3

  • The volume of a regular object is measured in
    cubed units or units3
  • The volume of a irregular object is measured in
    liters or millileters
  • The unit of volume of regular objects is cm3
  • The unit of volume of irregular objects is liters
    (L) or milliliters (mL)
  • Remember the following conversions
  • 1 L 1,000 mL
  • 1 L 1,000 cm3

Volume of Regular Objects
  • To find the volume of a regular object you must
    use the following formula
  • VOLUME Length x Width x Height
  • You can write the formula as V L x W x H

Volume of Irregular Objects
  • Irregular Objects are objects without even edges
    and surfaces (ex ball, rock, etc.)
  • To find the volume of an irregular object
  • Use a graduated cylinder and measure to the
    meniscus. The meniscus is the bottom of the curve
    that represents the actual volume (not the sides
    which are pushed up)
  • Notice that the liquid is being pushed up on the
    sides of the test tube. To measure correctly,
    you would take your reading on the BOTTOM of the
    curve. The dotted line indicates this point.

Volume of Irregular Objects
  • Calculate the volume of the water in the
    graduated cylinder (to the nearest mL)
  • Place the irregular object in the graduated
    cylinder
  • Calculate the volume of the water and the
    irregular object (to the nearest mL)
  • Subtract the volume of the water alone (without
    the irregular object) from the new volume
    (water and irregular object) to find the VOLUME

  • Volume of Water and Rock (Irregular Object) 37

  • 37 mL (Volume of Water and Rock)

    volume of the irregular object
