Synchronous To Do or Not?
  • Advantages

    collaborative work
  • Climate setting for course (Orientation?
    Get-acquainted? Get started faster?)
  • Interpersonal lng styles
  • Iterative QA/discussion
  • Other?
  • Disadvantages
  • Some learners not available
  • Technical constraints
  • Prep time and training of instructor
  • Training of students
  • Other?

3
What is Elluminate?
  • Software that allows multiple users to login
synchronously to share a host of collaborative
tools (e.g., chat, white board, polling,
    hand-raising, response voting)
  • User participation can be via microphone
(half-duplex audio), chat box, instant messaging,
    whiteboard, polling/voting
  • Sample collaborative synchronous tools
    Elluminate, HorizonLive, Webex, Macromedia
    Breeze, MS Live Meeting

4
How is it being used in HE?
  • Live, online class sessions (learning focus
participants collaborate to learn new skill)
  • Student group meetings/work sessions (multiple
private groups can use it at once)
  • Synchronous office hours/tutoring/advising
    sessions with application sharing
  • Committee meetings (work on common document
    fine-tune future presentation together
    brainstorm project strategies conduct interviews)

5
How is it being used in HE?
  • Just-in-time professional development (short,
mostly one-way product demos or focused
    presentations by experts asynchronous access
    like podcasting)
  • Live, professional development when collaboration
will enhance outcomes (brainstorm ideas, scenario
    problem-solving, role-playing, practice skills
    with live feedback, HOT activities)
  • Challenges
  • Scheduling
  • Students must download software enhancements at
least 30 minutes ahead. Slower access speeds may
    pose problems.
  • Some students dont have microphones
  • Provide tips ahead of time and practice for
    hosts, guests, listeners

  • Alternatively, instant messaging, email
  • Equipment allows for multiple callers to be cued
up and routed into the show when ready.
  • Producer needed to manage this, read email and
    instant messaging, handle technical glitches
