  • ECAD project
  • initiated in 1998 coordinated by KNMI
  • EUMETNET funding (ends in 2007)
  • now 54 participants (data holding
institutions)from 42 countries (WMO Region VI)
  • daily station data collectedand processed at
    KNMI
  • 4 journal papers andcolorful report issued in
    2002
  • provided the European input to global indices
studiesby Frich et al., 2002 and Alexander et
    al., 2006

5
  • http//eca.knmi.nl
  • this public website, which has been operational
    for 6 years now, presents
  • free download of about 75 of the daily station
    series
  • QC and homogeneity tests results for each series,
    as well as indices series
  • documentation, including indices comparison table
that highlights the different flavors of our
common indices in (R)CLIMDEX, APN, ECAD,
STARDEX( result from previous ET meeting in
    Norwich)

data (for near-real time monitoring later
    replaced by nation series)

  • Future work
  • solve data QC and homogeneity problems related to
    different observation times, station relocations
(lack of metadata), plus check suspicious
extremes with radar data and/or weather maps
  • include drought related indices, such as SPI
(based on rainfall data only) or SC-PDSI (based
on temperature, rainfall and WHC of soils)
  • transform the ECAD system into an operational
RCC functionality for WMO Region VI (as a means
to secure continuity after the funding ends)
  • make further connections to the KNMI Climate
Explorer at http//climexp.knmi.nl (by Geert Jan
van Oldenborgh), which already includes a long
list of all kinds of indices

22
  • ENSEMBLES project
  • (ENSEMBLE-based Predictions of Climate Changes
    and Impacts)
  • the daily station database of ECAD is extended
and improved data included from STARDEX,
EMULATE, GHCND, GSN, MAP, as well as many more
    nation series (KNMI, MeteoSwiss)
  • a daily gridded dataset (1960-2000) is produced
for Europe at 25x25 km2 resolution for
comparisons with RCMs (CRU, Oxford Univ.), using
    spatiotemporal stochastic simulation (Kyriadis et
    al., J. Hydrol., 2004)

23
2033 stations
  • 1831 precipitation
  • 1384 Tmax
  • 1388 Tmin
  • 1244 Tmean
  • 317 mslp
  • 180 snow depth

24
  • ENSEMBLES plans
  • evaluate the gridded dataset, in particular for
    the representation of extremes
  • study change in the occurrence of extremes in the
gridded dataset (and in RCM data) using core
indices and more advanced techniques (e.g. using
    spatial pooling of GEV parameters)
  • study relations with modes of natural variability
(following Haylock and Goodess, IJC, 2004)

28
  • Possibilities
  • all are welcome to use the open source software
(written in R, Java, PHP) that has been developed
for the ECAD website (for navigation, time
series plots, homogeneity plots, trend maps or
    anomaly maps)
  • ET to consider including some additional indices
from the ECAD list in the core set (e.g. drought
    related indices?)
  • extent the high resolution daily gridded dataset
(developed for Europe in ENSEMBLES) to other
    regions?
