Title: The Caltech Core-Collapse Program (CCCP)

1
The Caltech Core-Collapse Program (CCCP)
  • Study a complete sample of core-collapse SNe
    using Caltech telescopes at Palomar
  • 200 telescope (23 nights _at_2004B and 2005A,
Optical spectroscopy and IR photometry) and the
    robotic Palomar 60 telescope (Optical
    photometry)
  • Mutual support Berkeley Group (Filippenko et al)
ANU (Salvo, Schmidt) Wise Observatory (Maoz,
    Ofek, Poznanski)

2
CCCP Team
  • Avishay Gal-Yam (PI)
  • Brad Cenko
  • Derek Fox
  • Doug Leonard
  • Dae-Sik Moon
  • Dave Sand
  • Alicia Soderberg

3
Motivation
  • A complete sample of core-collapse SNe every
young (lt30 days after last non-detection at
    discovery) core-collapse (via spectroscopy or
phototyping) SN, above 18.5 mag, visible from
    Palomar
  • Characterize the CC SN population
  • Test viability of SNe II-P for cosmology
  • Provide well studied sample of Ib/c SNe as
    comparison for high-z GRB studies

4
Related/Integrated projectsat Caltech
  • A comprehensive study of SNe Ib/c in the radio,
optical and X-ray (Soderberg, Kulkarni, et al.)
  • Effort to test the cosmological utility of SNe
II-P (Ellis, Sullivan, Nugent, Baltay, Leonard et
    al.)
  • Spectropolarimetry (see Poster by Leonard for
    exciting result!)

5
Preliminary results
  • 20 SNe observed so far (12 II, 8 Ib/c) so
expected total is 50, as expected
  • Early photometry from P60
  • High S/N spectra from P200 and Keck
  • Sparse (but high S/N and very accurate) IR
    photometry

CCCP and you
  • CCCP science is damaged by weather. We seek
community help in securing continuous coverage
    throughout the year.
  • CCCP will support time critical studies of SNe
and GRBs, e.g., the large HST SN Ia UV campaign
    (PI Filippenko), more ?
