15Challenges
IMAC May 2005
- Cryogenics system critical path
- Linde compressors and cryogenics arrived
- Gas tanks, He gas pipes, N pipes done
- critical path valve box, system tuning
- SC devices critical path
- SC Magnets production _at_BNL small delay
- SC cavities arrived IHEP last week.
- BESIII SC magnet winding to be finished in 10
days. Assembling / testing? reach the
specifications ? - Uncertainty in system tuning
- Field mapping
16IMAC report (May, 205)
- There are apparent discrepancies between the
schedule used by the project office and the one
used by the group leaders. - The completion of the cryogenic system can not be
accurately predicted due to the delivery of
connection box from HIST and completion of
transfer lines. So far, there is about 3 months
delay. - The delivery of vacuum chamber and the Ti-N
coating also encountered possible delay of about
3 months and with no effective plan of recovery.
- Commissioning of all three SC components, SCQ,
SRF, SSM also will be delayed by more than 3
months caused by the delay of completion of the
cryogenic system. More experienced manpower is
needed to complete the design and installation of
the cryogenic transfer lines and smooth start up
of the cryogenic system. - The time allowed for combined field measurement
with SCQ and SSM in place appears too tight.
17Difficulties
- The teams of cryogenics system and SC devices
are limited and shortage of experiences. However,
Many helps from experts of DESY and KEK, the
teams are shaping. - Poor performance of HIT Inst. of SCC delay, bad
cooperation and poor management - BESIII SC magnet Wang NMR Co. in some troubles
- We could handle other problems, such as
mechanics, control, electronics
18Spare Scheme of IR
- Delay uncertainties of IR devices commissioning
- SCQ Valve boxes later arrival and delay in
installation - BESIII SC magnet
- Possible further delay in installation,
commissioning and filed mapping - A spare scheme of the IR lattice configuration
without SCQ is designed and under preparation . - Two normal conducting bending magnets (70B) will
replace the two SCQ IR magnets. - With this scheme, the outer ring (SR), the
electron ring and positron ring can be
commissioned. - The spare scheme is to save the time of about 3
months for the SCQ field measurement with
detector solenoid and the field mapping of the
detector solenoid itself.
19Quality Control
- Quality control system established
- Quality control manuals
- Quality control forms
- Quality controller
- Review designs and prototypes
- Monitor quality and progress in factories
- Most of cases are successful, while some cases
have problems in quality and schedule for various
reasons. - In case of problem, quality is the first.
- Over design happens some times.

44Summary
- LINAC tuning goes smoothly with good progress.
- Manufacture of most of components of Storage
rings and detector goes well. Some delays and
technical difficulties in SC components. - So far, no fundamental problem found in the
machine and the detector. - We are in a difficult period with many problems
in quality and schedule. Great challenges in
next 18 month. - About 4 month delay in schedule so far.
- Thank you for helps from IMAC and many Labs
