Title: Coeducation

1
Co-education
  • Promoting Co-education In Scouting

2
How Long...?
  • ...has Scouting been mixed?

3
How Many...?
  • ...Groups were mixed in 2004?

4
Is It True That...?
  • ...you have to have female leaders in a mixed
    Section?

5
Do You...?
  • ...have to make changes to your Nights Away
    arrangements?

6
If You...?
  • want to go mixed before 2007, do you still need
to consult with all interested parties?

7
Who Said...?
  • Girls ask me if they may share the delights of
a Scouting life with the boys. But of course they
may! I am always glad to hear of girls patrols
    being formed.

8
We Believe
  • that young people grow into more effective
citizens when they live and work together,
learning and understanding more about each other.

9
The Timetable For Change
  • All young people accepted into all Sections from
    1 January 2007
  • Can be rolled out at local level

10
Co-education and Mixed Scouting
  • Co-education
  • Opportunity to understand everybody as
    individuals, regardless of gender
  • Mixed Scouting
  • Males and females taking part in Scouting
    activities

11
Benefits of Co-education
  • Enables young people to fulfil their potential
    and...
  • Become confident, responsible citizens.
  • Best way to achieve this is through mixed
    Sections.

12
Julie From London
  • As a Scout Leader, my then DC was totally
against girls in Scouting, I invited him on camp
several times and after a while he admitted to me
that the positive effect and competitive edge had
improved dramatically with the girls being there
I grinned like a Cheshire cat all day long

13
Youth Membership
14
The National Picture
  • Percentage of girls and young women per
    county/area
  • 0 5

Facts and Figures
Mixed Sections
Female Members
2003 Census 2004 Census
16
Liz From The North West
  • In Scout Groups, the female/male Leadership
tends to be pretty even, but in District/County
teams they are still male-dominated. I was the
only female at most of my meetings and felt like
    a token gesture

17
Selling the Message
  • Promote benefits to local community
  • Members, Leaders, parents, friends
  • An opportunity for a recruitment campaign?

18
Peter From The Midlands
  • Girls are as good at Scouting as boys are, if
not better at most things that must be kind of
shocking to the diehards in the Movement

19
Support and Resources
  • One Movement Working Together
  • Living and Working Together Update
  • On-going learning module
  • Articles, programme ideas, and more...!

20
Kevin From Bristol
  • Everyone can offer something. My advice is to
treat all young people as Scouts first and
foremost. They have joined Scouting because they
want to do Scouting activities its not rocket
    science
