Human centered Design
  • What is it?

3
Human centered design
  • Design methods systematically expand spaces of
possibilities and contract them to arguable
proposals- to bring forward desirable futures or
    prevent undesirable fro, occurring
  • They are concerned with how stakeholders
attribute meanings. Decision on meanings cannot
be taken away from those who are effected by a
    design
  • They render design proposals empirically
    testable, at least in principle

4
5 methods
  • Re-designing the characters of artifacts
  • Designing artifacts that are informative
    (expressive of their workings)
  • Designing artifacts, guided by narrative and
    metaphors
  • Designing design strategies
  • Dialogical ways o design

5
Re-designing the characters of artifacts
  • It is possible to a conceptually unproblematic
kind of artifact automibiles, truck cabins,
    interiours, writswatches, perfumes containers,
    brand mages, politicians.
  • Requires an initial definition of the character
to be achieved and thos to be avoided.
  • Requires the designation of the communities of
    users, stakeholders, or critics whose
    attributions matter

6
Re-designing the characters of artifacts
  • 5 steps
  • Elaborate or expand, use thesaurus, use focus
groups, ask linguists or experts on subject
  • Analyze and group the two expanded sets of
attributes ordering them by how familiar they are
within the intended community of users.. Etc.
  • Generate sensory manifestations of the chosen
traits, for instance if the appearance of
fastness is the issues, search for ways that the
adjective pair fast and slow could be visualized.
  • Reconcile incompatibilities in these
manifestations. The challenge and creative part
of the method is to explore which manifestations
are combinable and can inform the structure of
    the design.
  • Test the design that has emerged from the step
before, one character trait at one time, against
the attributes developed in step 2.

7
Designing artifacts that are informative
(expressive of their workings)
  • Decompose
  • Generate
  • Explore
  • Reconcile the incompatibilities
  • test

8
Designing artifacts, guided by narrative and
metaphors
  • Implicit understanding
  • Variability and creativity
  • Coordination, not sharing
  • 5 steps
  • Collect or generate relevant narratives and
    metaphors
  • Analyze narratives into scenarios and the
    semantic components

9
  • Explore technical details
  • Synthesize and realize
  • Test

10
Designing design strategies
  • Managing design
  • Designing intuitively obvious design conventions
  • Designing rich combinatorial interface standards
  • Redesigning inspiring organizational cultures
  • Deigning adaptive strategies forproduct
    development

11
Dialogical ways o design
  • Introduce a narrative of the future technology
  • Generating a wide range of optional paths so as
to enable the exploration of advantages and
    disadvantages within these meetings.
  • Finally the decisions of where to go were turned
over to the stakeholders in this technology
