Silverton Outdoor Learning Recreation Center

What do we do in the San Juans?
  • We are a new expert only ski area and learning
facility located 6 miles North outside of
    Silverton.
  • We will have a chairlift rising from 10,300 to
    12,300.
  • We collect information about the weather and snow
    stability in the area.
  • SOLRC will initially provide training in outdoor
    education, expanding into environmental snow,
    weather and geohazard studies.

3
Who can use SOLRC?
  • Snow riders and students will need to pass an
avalanche awareness test and show proper
avalanche equipment before loading the lift in
    the winter.
  • We will also run the lift in the summer for
    scenic rides and classes.

4
Information about our base area
  • There are two phases to the construction
  • -Phase 1 will have a yurt for a base area and
    two overnight huts
  • -Phase 2 will have a 2,200sqft base lodge with
classroom space and 10 overnight huts
  • We are operational 4 days a week, leaving 3 days
for the entire facility to be devoted to teaching

5
Focus of our education programs
  • Avalanche and backcountry awareness
  • Weather and snow science
  • High Altitude Training
  • Outdoor survival and medicine
  • Environmental geohazards
  • Writing workshops

6
Kinds of data we generate
  • We will have current data on avalanche and
weather patterns for the Gladstone/ Storm Peak
    area.
  • We have a remote radio telemetry weather station
on the western flank of Storm Peak-12,600.

7
Avalanches
  • Highly avalanche prone study area
  • Excellent for testing of new techniques
  • Explosive reduction work
  • Avalanche forecasters data collectors
  • Utilize pioneer new safety techniques

8
Our Weather Station
  • Located 12,600
  • Collects around the clock temperature, wind
direction, and wind speed. Automated base
station measures temperature, daily snowfall, and
    total snow depth.
  • We are looking for funding for additional snow
depth sensors and/or a weather station on the
    East ridge.

9
Data Distribution
  • Students
  • Colorado Avalanche Information Center
  • Snow report will give information about weather
    and snow conditions
  • Databases and data logger that can be accessed by
    computer telephone

10
Environmental Responsibility
  • For every tree we cut for our chairlift we are
planting two elsewhere on our property.
  • No cut trees for ski runs.
  • We continue to work with local groups and
agencies to help clean up Cement Creek. We will
donate labor to help with mine clean ups.
  • We will be teaching classes in environmental
field studies awareness, expanding into a wide
    range of education fields.
