YOU ARE NOW A CERTIFIED TEACHER IN ONTARIO!!

What Kind of Teacher Do You Want to Be?
  • If interested in teaching in the Primary/Junior
    (Kindergarten to Grade 3) or the
    Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 -10) levels you
    require a 3 year degree (90 credits). Expert in
    1 teaching subject.
  • If interested in teaching at the Intermediate/
    Senior Level you require a 4 year honours degree
    (120 Credits). Expert in 2 teaching subjects.
  • If interested in teaching at the university
    level, require a PhD plus years of research
    experience

What you need to become a teacher
  • To teach in Ontario you need to complete 3 years
    of full-time study leading to a post-secondary
    degree
  • This is followed by a 1 year
  • Bachelors of Education degree
  • Technological education
  • teachers require 5 years of
  • work experience

Teaching in Elementary Schools
  • Elementary school teachers teach most school
    subjects
  • University specialize in one or two subjects
    from the elementary school curriculum (ie.
    English, History, Science or Math)
  • Courses in psychology, child development or
    sociology of the family are helpful

Teaching in Secondary Schools
  • Secondary school teachers require academic
    credentials in at least two subject areas
  • In University major and minor in 2 of the
    following Science (Physics, Chemistry or
    Biology), Math, English, Religious Studies,
    Philosophy, History, etc.
  • Take an Honours degree if you want to be a
    subject specialist (Teach Grades 11 12)

  • Volunteer in/at
  • Schools (Elementary or High School)
  • Community Centers
  • Recreation Centers
  • Religious Programs
  • Application process requires completion of a
    personal statement indicating all
  • volunteer / work experience

The Best Ways to Get Involved
  • Volunteer with students in the age group you want
    to teach
  • Ideal experience would be in a classroom setting,
    as a teaching assistant for example.
  • Working with groups related with issues of social
    equity and justice, example SAINTS (Students
    Against Injustice Never Tire Society) at my old
    high school.

Stage 2 Teachers College

General vs. Technological
  • General Teachers require a degree as mentioned
    previously.
  • Technological Teachers on the other hand can
    teach if they have a minimum of at least 5
    working experience in a field.
  • For example mechanics can teach at the college or
    high-school level

Concurrent Education vs. Consecutive Education
  • The Concurrent Education Program allows teacher
    candidates to pursue an undergraduate degree at
    the same time as a Bachelor of Education
  • The Consecutive Education Program is designed for
    those candidates who have already obtained their
    undergraduate degree

Consecutive Education Program
  • Students can apply in the last year of their
    degree, or after graduating.
  • Can complete program on a part time
  • (3 years) or full time (1 year) basis.
  • Approximately 7000 students compete for about 700
    spaces (York U). About a 10 acceptance rate.

Concurrent Education Program
  • Students usually apply by the end of the first or
    second years of their undergraduate degrees.
  • Bachelor of Education is completed at the same
    time as your bachelor degree.
  • Must be completed in 5 years
  • Take a stop-over year in 3rd or 4th year to focus
    strictly on courses for your bachelors degree,
    not teaching degree

  • Should use TEAS to apply for admission to a
    teachers college
  • Leads to OCT Certificate of Qualification in a
    consecutive program at an Ontario faculty of
    education

    involvment

Concurrent Program Continued...
  • Teaching Practicum required each year, this is
    where students teach a high-school class once a
    week for duration of the school year
  • Requires a minimum C overall GPA (York) for
    admission
  • Personal statement, 2 reference letters, personal
    profile and interview all part of the application
    process.
  • Everyone who applies gets an interview unlike
    applying to medical school for example.

  • The OCT was established by legislation to serve
    and protect the public interest through
    certifying, governing and enforcing the standards
    of practice for the teaching profession
  • Teachers in publicly funded schools (and some
    private schools) must be members in good standing
    with the OCT

    minutes
  • Interviewed by 2 individuals, not necessarily
    from Yorks Faculty of Education
  • During the interview, one individual strictly
    asks questions where the other individual
    strictly observes and notes everything your
    saying
