3And the question is ..Do we give children the
chance to be problem solvers, communicate, use
mathematical vocabulary, reason make choices and
connections ?
4Do children have the opportunity to
- pattern
- problem solve
- sequence
- reason
- measure
- classify
- estimate
- make
connections - Do
they use -
numerals -
shapes -
relationships -
mathematical terms
5Book Suggestions
- The Doorbell Rang
- If You Give a Pig a Pancake
- Peters Chair
- Max and Ruby Series
6Mathematic must haves
- tape measure
- rulers
- yardsticks
- yarn or string
- clipboards
- calculators
- balance scales
- blocks
- sorting trays
- measuring cups and spoons
- geoboards
- attribute blocks
- unifix cubes
- numerals
- shapes
- two and three dimensional shapes
7Algebra, geometry and spatial sense with
preschoolers!
- Every time we use blocks, boxes, containers,
puzzles, shape sorters, and/or paper towel rolls
we are helping children learn about geometry.
8- This area of mathematics
includes size, shape, space, direction, movement,
positions, angles, shapes and three dimensional
figures.
9- Spatial sense happens
- when children become
- aware of themselves
- in relation
- to the people,
- materials,
- and objects
- that are
- around them.
10What about all those numbers
- Number sense and numeration is more than just
counting ! - It includes being able to count starting with a
given number - It is understanding more about counting
accurately and making the connection between the
quantity and the relationship
11Measure, measure, measureanything and everything!
- How tall is it?
- How long is it?
- How much does it weigh?
- Find the length, width, height or weight
- Measure items using non standard forms of
measurement including feet, hands, boxes, yarn
etc.
12Patterns, patterns everywhere!
- What comes next?
- Its rhyme and repetition!
- Red, green, red, green, yellow, red, ___
- Look for patterns in the days of the week, months
of the year and our
classroom routines - Wooden beads
- The clothes we wear
13Fractions with preschoolers, No way! Yes,
way!
- What about the pizza slices that make up the
whole pie - the one in the dramatic play center
- Use an apple slicer, cut up an apple,
- Serve two half pieces of crackers at snack time
- and how about that tray of cookies!
14Math and Sciencewhat a perfect fit!
- Collections
- Graph the weather
- Measure the plants
- Count the number of days it takes for the beans
to sprout - Make a rain or snow gauge
- Its snowing use squirt bottled filled
- with colored water and measure
- how far you can squirt the water
- across the snow
15Math and Literacy
- Make books
- Read stories that involve rhymes, numbers,
patterns, repetition - How many books did we read at school today ?
- Label containers for materials
- (one to one correspondence)
- Sequence parts of stories first, then, next..
16Math and Blocks
- Relationships - two rectangles/one square
- Classify - alike and different
- Use descriptive words - more or less
- seriate - longest (or tallest) to shortest
- shapes - name them
- pattern
- measure - distance, height, length
17Numerals and Number Sense
- How many people live in your house?
- How many slices of pizza..
18And the question is .
- Higher Order
- I wonder what would happen if we put these two
rectangles together? - What are some different ways we could build a
house? - I see you built a house. How can we build a ramp
for this wheelchair?
- Low order
- What shape is this?
- Who has the number three?
- Do you want to use this rectangle?
- How many sides does a triangle have?
19Math and Dramatic Play
- Everyone goes shopping
- sell something/
- make different shape signs
- Include prices
- Build a store
- Use the calculator
- How many items fit in the bag
- Add a scale
20Math and Art
- I see you mixed two colors together to make
orange - add small wood shapes for gluing
- add math shapes for collage work
- graph your favorite color
- make a matching game of art tools
- cut up a picture and make a picture puzzle
- patterns
21Math and SensoryWater, Sand, and Clay
- Bring snow or water gauges to the center
- use rulers and measure the amount
- make play dough using a rebus recipe
- use a size variety of measuring cups
- talk about volume -
- descriptive words, more/less
- heavy/light, cold/warm, wet/dry
22Math with Music and Movement
- Two baby steps
- and one hip hop step
- Jump four times
- Listen and follow me
- Clap clap clap
- Count and listen to rhyming songs
- Theres a spider on the square on the square!
23Its Pajama Day!Lets look at The Night Sky
- Attach small fluorescent stars to a dark blue
piece of material. Hang it across the ceiling.
Using flashlights count the number of stars in
the sky. - How many points does a star have?
24What about the weather?
- Graph it
- How many rainy, snowy, sunny days in a week
- Make a rain or snow gauge
- how many sides does a snowflake have
25About those insects and arachnids
- How many legs does a spider have?
- How many wings does a dragonfly have?
- Count the number of spots on the ladybug?
- How long is an inchworm?
- How small is a hummingbirds egg?
26Next time you write a family newsletter, add a
math section
- While driving in a car point out
- Numbers on a license plate
- Speed limit signs
- Shape of signs
- Make a picture grocery list
- Laundry is a great math activity
- - try sorting
- socks, gloves mittens, by color shape and size.
- Lets talk about pairs.
- Make Monday triangle sandwich day,
- Tuesday, circle sandwich day..
27Everybody wears socks!
28Pajama Day!One of our favorite stories
29He played what?
