The Range
  • Black knot disease is commonly found in the
orchard fields of the United States. The disease
seems to spread because with cherry and plum
trees they dont use sprays. The Black knot
disease is also know for infecting European,
    Japanese, and American varieties.

3
Description
  • The Black knot disease develops from fungus
Apiosporina morbosa. It can effect black
cherries, chokecherries and plum trees. The
disease infects rough dark areas of the tree, and
once it has spread it kills the effected parts
and it now allows a new habitat for insects.

4
Life Cycle
  • The black knot disease are most common in the
spring because the disease is either wind or rain
blown. The infection can spread from the green
cluster stage and starts to seas at the beginning
of June. After the infection takes place it
starts to brown in the same place, the swell and
eventually produces spores. This is when fruiting
bodies develop along the surface of the knot.

5
Host plant And Transmission
  • The three host plants are the black cherry,
cherry, plum and prune trees. The transmission of
the disease is by birds and wind currents.

6
Prevention and control
  • The disease tends to spread faster in warm and
wet weather. A way you could prevent the disease
from spreading is that you could prune and trim
the infected twigs and branches during the fall
and winter season. For this they say you should
cut at least 10cm off where there were visible
signs of infection. There are two more ways that
you can control the disease this is buy using
    lime sulfur and garden sulfur.
