Information you should have seen
  • Pupils have been sent home with the leaflet
  • Coursework a guide for parents.
  • JCQ instructions for conducting coursework.
  • Copies of both are available tonight.
  • They can also be downloaded from the school
    website.

Coursework
Not all subjects do coursework, subjects that do
not carry out coursework include RE, Maths,
Urdu, Business Studies
The amount of coursework varies depending on the
subject.
Art is 100 practical (60 coursework, 40
controlled test held in art rooms).

Coursework
  • In 2008, 1037 students were penalised from
    copying from other candidates and plagiarising
    work.
  • Pupils sign a form to say that it is all their
    own work.
  • It is not worth the risk! Please try and support
    your child that the work they have done is
    entirely their own work.

Exam January 2010
  • GCSE  Core Science B1,C1,P1.   
  • Timetables will be going out
  • next week for those doing Core Science.

Re-sits
  • If pupils do not get their target grade they will
    be given the opportunity to re-sit their exam
    next year. We advise that they take their initial
    exam seriously as it impacts on the already heavy
    workload in Year 11.
  • The cost of the re-sit has to be met by the
    pupil.
  • Deadline date must be met if they do decide to
    re-sit their exam.

Timetables
  • Timetables will be issued in the next week for
    January examinations.
  • Timetable will be issued in March for Summer
    examinations.
  • School exams will be held during June.
  • We do advise that pupils use their timetables to
    plan out their revision for the exams.

Before the Exam
  • Go to bed early the night before exams.
  • Eat a good breakfast before your morning exams
    it will help you to concentrate.
  • Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the
    stated time so get an earlier bus. Make sure you
    allow for the unexpected bad weather, bus not
    turning up

Equipment
Remember Bring all the equipment you need for
the examination!
Pencil Cases must be see through Black pens only
No Gel Pens Calculators - leave the covers in
your bags

Mobile Phones/Ipods
  • Leave at home if possible.
  • Mobile phones if brought to school need to be
    turned off and in your bag.  
  • You could be disqualified from your exam if the
    phone goes off.
  • Check if you have set an alarm the alarm could
    sound even if the phone is turned off.

  • necessarily the start of a future career!!
  • A two week holiday!!

PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
  • Pupils have opportunity to organise their own
    placements. A letter and a Green Student
    Arranged Placement will be issued next week.

DEADLINE Fri 11th DECEMBER
  • Pupils complete an Application Form giving their
    first second choices from 18 categories

DEADLINE Fri 4th DECEMBER
  • Applications are matched with available
    placements and allocated. Pupils receive a Job
    Description and an Agreement Form.

TARGET DATE Mon 1st FEBRUARY
  • Pupils have 3 working days to accept their offer
    and collect a pink B.E.S.Y. Contract form

  • e.g. the name of a SPECIFIC firm or PLACE ( NO
    GUARANTEES!)

Students contact their placement and arrange an
interview as soon as Placement accepted
PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
  • Students go to interview taking a B.E.S.Y.
    Contract (pink form) with them during

FEBRUARY MARCH
  • Pink forms MUST be handed in when complete.
    They must be signed by a parent and the employer
    and quote details of their insurance.

DEADLINE Friday 5th March
PLACEMENT COMMENCES Mon 22nd

Self Arranged Placements (SAPs)
  • The green form is sent on completion to
    B.E.S.Y. and the placement will be checked fully
    for its suitability HS and Insurance
  • Only when B.E.S.Y. has given its consent can the
    placement go ahead.
  • Obviously the earlier information can be supplied
    to B.E.S.Y. the easier the administration process
    becomes.
  • B.E.S.Y. requires 12 weeks to complete all these
    checks.

DEADLINES
IF DEADLINES ARE NOT MET
  • Students may be too late to submit their own
    placements due to Health Safety assessment
    timescale
  • Incomplete risk assessment forms will result in
    delaying the start of the placement
  • NO FORM NO INSURANCE NO PLACEMENT
  • Missing a deadline is not a good start to
    work experience. Students should start with
    a mature and responsible attitude!!

  • THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES UNLESS THE STUDENTS
  • FIND THEIR OWN PLACEMENTS!

How can you help?
  • Talk to your child about their aspirations and
    what they hope to gain from the placement
  • Try to ensure that forms are submitted on time
  • Check and make sure your child is punctual for
    the
  • interview, dressed appropriately, knows
    something
  • about the place and shows some interest.

  • during the placement it will be
  • tiring and demanding.

Placement details(Job Descriptions)
  • Pupils need to check their start and finish
    times.
  • Check the arrangements regarding lunch break
    and meal provision
  • A Uniform may be required or particular
    clothes need to be worn

During the Placement 1.
  • Punctuality this is VERY important to
    Employers, both at the beginning of the day and
    back from breaks / lunch.
  • Illness if your son / daughter is unable to go
    to work due to illness it is vital that you
    contact BOTH the Work Placement AND School.
  • (I can then ensure that a the Visiting Staff
    tutor does not waste time visiting on that day)

During the Placement 2.
  • Student Record Books students should remember to
    complete this before, during and after the
    placement.
  • A letter of thanks is always a good idea too!
  • Employer Reports students will be given an
    envelope containing a Letter for their employer,
    an Employer Report Form and an Addressed
    Envelope to return this to me in school. This can
    be either by hand or by post depending on the
    employer.
