Title: Microwave Digital Library Status Report

1
Microwave Digital Library Status Report
  • AdCom Fall Meeting 2004
  • - Luciano Boglione -

2
Project Status
  • Digital Archive 2003 project (1953-2003)
  • Currently disks are being replicated (5,500
    journal 5,500 index disks)
  • Shipment to IEEE around end of September/early
    October
  • DA Project costs as estimated (18K 19K)
  • Should be less than 45 of the budgeted cost!!!
  • Please note that
  • Dec 2003 J-LT issue (joined sponsorship) is
    included as requested
  • Index and journal disks will be sold to members
  • Lower number of disks requested reflects drop in
    MTT Societys membership
  • Replication costs increase for orders of less
    than 5,000 disks

3
Big issue came up!
  • PDFs provided by IEL (IEEE) are created with
settings that result in PDFs whose combined size
exceed the capacity of the CDROM disk.
  • This year we got around by down-sampling the
figures trading off space with lower quality
    (150dpi vs. 300dpi)
  • The index disk is also getting full
  • In about 2 years!

4
Journal disk
  • OPTIONS
  • Keep using 1 CDROM disks and downsample
  • Use 2 CDROM disks and keep IEL quality
  • Use 1 DVD disk and keep IEL quality
  • CONS
  • Figure quality is reduced
  • Replication costs go up (2 disks vs. 1 disk to
    make and ship)
  • DVD replication cost is 3X (1.29/DVD vs.
    0.40/CD)

5
Index disk
  • OPTIONS
  • Use DVD
  • Same look feel
  • Freeze current index and start a new index
  • Searches cannot span over full index
  • CONS
  • DVD costs more
  • Searches cannot span over full index

6
Moving forward - Options
  • Do nothing
  • Revisit in a couple of years what to do with the
    index disk
  • Quality from now on will be affected
  • Costs are kept low
  • Quality papers can be downloaded from Xplore if
    available to user
  • Move to DVDs
  • DAs look and feel is kept the same
  • 40 cost increase (relative to 2004)
  • Is DVD technology perceived as widely available
    to MTT-S DA users?
  • Mix DVDs and CDROM disks
  • Same concern as in 2
  • 30 cost increase (relative to 2004)
  • Reissue DA on DVDs
  • Only 3 disks may contain entire archive
  • Go e-archive!
  • Kill journal disk
  • Use index DVD to point to Xplore
  • DA is useful for searching the past, Xplore to
    search the future!
  • Can this be accomplished?
  • Is on-line access widely available?
  • Use 1 DVD disk instead of 2 or more
  • Costs may be comparable to current costs

7
Action Items for AdCom
  • Think what to do with the digital archive
  • Discuss what you envision for DAs future
  • Let me know by January AdCom meeting
  • Thanks!
