Title: INFUSING HABITS OF MIND AT YEAR 7 Religious Education, English and Mathematics

1
INFUSING HABITS OF MIND AT YEAR 7Religious
Education, English and Mathematics
2
OUR QUESTION
  • How can we be more explicit in our curriculum
planning and teaching of content as a means of
infusing Habits of Mind in our subject areas of
    English, Religious Education and Mathematics?
  • How can we use open ended tasks to explicitly
teach Habits of Mind within subject areas?
  • What Habits of Mind will be presented/used within
    a subject area?

3
CONTEXT
  • Currently our enrolment stands at approximately
1300 of which there are 240 Year 7s
  • At St. Josephs there have been significant
initiatives aimed at supporting the boys during
    their transition into secondary school
  • The aim of this project was to enhance the
academic well being of the students in Year 7
  • The target group would be three Year 7 classes
and the process would take place throughout Term
    3 and 4

4
THE PROCESS BEGINS THREE STORIES
  • 7 G Vicki Mills
  • Identifying the boys strengths and weaknesses
and empowering them to take action through H.O.M
to address their weaknesses, through the
    discipline of Religious Education

5
THE PROCESS BEGINS THREE STORIES
  • 7 E - Linda Bentley
  • Improving the effectiveness of class discussion,
    encourage stronger independence in the
preparation and execution of the writing task and
open students to a greater awareness of the
Habits of Mind that impact on the quality of
    their relationships and learning

6
THE PROCESS BEGINS THREE STORIES
  • 7 I Philip Bates
  • Investigating which habits aligned themselves
more closely to Mathematics than other habits. It
was hoped that the boys would gain a greater
understanding of which habits they were able to
implement effectively in Mathematics learning and
which habits needed improving. From here it would
be hoped that boys would implement change in
learning habits where applicable to their
    learning of Mathematics

7
FUTURE PLANNING 1
  • We intend to share our experience of being
involved in the Individualized Learning project
at a whole staff meeting on November 10th.
  • We would like to facilitate professional
development on the Habits of Mind within our
school, possibly at Homeroom Teacher meetings or
    faculty meetings
  • Our aim would be to have a shared understanding
and language of Habits of Mind across Year 7 as
well as a shared pedagogy across Year 7 staff

8
FUTIRE PLANNING 2
  • Include Habits of Mind into our curriculum
documentation and to incorporate it into our
students personal goal setting as per the VELS
    reporting requirements
  • Provide parents and families with information on
the habits through our fortnightly newsletter and
    our school website.
  • Continue to enhance our teaching practice through
the use of Habits of Mind, applying it to all
    subject areas

9
  • Think of a student you have taught for several
    years.
  • He comes to you and asks you to write a reference
  • for him.
  • Think of some of the words / phrases you would
  • like to be able to include on this reference.

10
  • Recipe For Success
  • We all want our students to be successful and to
    experience success.
  • Habits of the Mind are part of this recipe for
    success.

confronted with problems, the resolutions of
    which are not immediately apparent?

22
  • Research Base for Habits of Mind
  • Derived from studies of highly successful and
  • intelligent individuals
  • Based on several decades of research into the
    nature of intelligence
  • Gardner Multiple intelligences is an idea that
maintains there exist many different types of
    "intelligences" ascribed to human beings.
  • Feuerstein Intelligence can be taught
  • Goleman social and emotional learning programs
pave the way for better academic learning.

23
  • More than just someone's good idea

24
  • Misconception Alert!
  • The Habits of Mind are something new, a fad.
  • The Habits of Mind are not something new they
    are simply a
  • way of providing a common language, and common
    focus
  • on behaviors that are valued by teachers, parents
    and the
  • wider community

25
  • Common language common focus
  • The common language empowers both the teacher and
    the student.
  • It provides a framework for what we do with every
student in behavior management, curriculum and
    the maintaining of relationships.

26
  • Dispositional Thinking Survey
  • Rate your Habits of Mind

  • Our Success with Habits of the Mind

29
  • Self management of behavior through
identification of the habit he most needed to
    work on
  • because at home I get out of hand and I get
angry. Lately I have manage (sic) at home to not
get angry but I am still trying to figure out
what strategies I am using to manage my
    impulsivity.

30
  • Our Success with Habits of Mind

31
  • Self management of learning in Mathematics
  • I cant do this, this is too hard.
  • poor body language
  • self defeating language
  • poor preparation for tests
  • I want to continue to be persistent, and if I
want to improve I need to work harder at striving
for accuracy more consistently. I want to move
my score from a 4 to an 8 or 9 by the end of the
    year.

32
  • Our Success with Habits of Mind

33
  • Self management of the development of
    relationships
  • I find it difficult to understand how someone
    else feels about something.
  • Difficulty fitting in forming new relationships
  • helped me become more aware of what Im doing.
It could help me make new friends.
