Accrington Technologies Limited
  • An Introduction

2
Background
  • Accrington Technologies Limited founded in 2004
    as a joint venture between-
  • Merseytravel
  • Ecebs

3
Merseytravel
  • Merseytravel intends to improve continually the
services it provides or funds so that they better
meet the needs of those who visit, live or work
    in Merseyside.
  • The public sector body co-ordinates public
    transport through partnership initiatives, with
the aim of delivering a fully integrated and
    environmentally friendly public transport
    network.
  • Merseytravel is committed to playing a major role
in the continued regeneration of Merseyside
incorporating high quality public transport as an
    integral feature of commercial developments.
  • Accrington furthers these objectives.

4
Ecebs
  • Advanced Technology Company based in East
    Kilbride, Scotland.
  • Specialists in smartcard and related security
    software
  • Main product areas Transport, Payment and all
    forms of ID based applications.

5
Reasons for Joint Venture
  • Merseytravel are committed supporters of
innovation and service improvement in Transport.
  • Ecebs have technological capability in delivering
    such benefits.
  • Making it easier to obtain tickets improves
service, ease of use and the passenger
    experience.
  • Opportunity to develop and deploy nationally (and
    internationally).

6
First Accrington Product
  • High security smartcard transactions need access
to a secure application module (SAM).
  • Computer hardware which compliments software
    security.
  • Not practical to have SAMs at every point of
    service.
  • SAM array System (SAS) first Accrington product.
    Supports ITSO.

7
ITSO SAM ARRAY SYSTEM ISAS
  • ITSO Architecture requires the ITSO Security
Application Module (ISAM) to be resident at every
    transaction point.
  • The ISAS enables networked machines to
access/share an ISAM in an array.
  • ISAS maintains the ITSO architecture in its
    entirety.

ITSO Architecture Overview
10
ITSO and ISAS
  • The ISAM is the trusted policeman of the ITSO
environment and so must participate in every
    transaction.
  • If the transaction time can be extended, and it
is easy to have the POST on-line, the ISAM can be
    shared over a network.
  • The result is a distributed POST using Internet
    protocols with shared ISAMs
  • Can be deployed both over a private Intranet
(such as for the Post Office network or BT
phone kiosks) or even the Internet for use at
    home.

11
ISAS Architecture Overview
12
Where can ISAS be used?
  • Terminals connected by a network.
  • Where transactions do not have to be conducted
instantly such as a tube gate.
  • Home PCs
  • What is needed to deploy?
  • ISO Standard smartcard reader / writer
  • Interface software
  • Suitable smartcards

13
Benefits
  • Costs Easier to install than ISAMs.
  • Ease of implementation Deployed with standard
    protocols.
  • Ease of maintenance less sites to manage.
  • New capabilities remote tickets sales and
    delivery

14
ITSO and ISAS
  • Does ISAS obsolete the need for ISAMs?
  • No. ISAMs are still needed for standalone and
fast transaction points of service. Many other
terminals will still have ISAMs for operational
    purposes.
