  advocate of theory and practice. St. Louis
  Manual Training School of Washington University
  in 1879.
• John D. Runkel President of MIT, influenced by
  the Russian exhibit at the 1876 Centennial
  Exposition. Relationship between manual training
  and art.

• Booker T. Washington Defined an educated person
  as one possessing
• Cognative and problem solving skills
• Self discipline
• Moral standards, and
• Sense of service.
• Every Tuskegee student required to do manual
  labor. Learning more than rote. Believed that
  total environmental should be conductive to
  learning. Washingtons efforts continue to
  influence education today.

• David Sneeden Advocate of social efficiency,
  occupational experience as much like workplace as
  possible, serious consideration for separate
  facilities (dual system), argued that teachers
  from regular schools not be allowed to teach in
  vocational schools.
• Charles Prosser One of Sneedens students that
  reflected many of his views. Advocated practice
  and thinking, doing and thinking about doing.
  Theory and practice go hand in hand. Devoted
  much of his time to promoting vocational
  education.
