Introduction and Brief History

• Pre 1947 First Autopilots controlled flight path
  and gave level flight. System comprised of
  spinning weights that maintain a specific
  orientation
• 1947 The U.S. Air Force successfully tested
  the first fully functioning
  autopilot system. The system controlled
  takeoff, landing, and flight path.
• These early systems were prone to error and
  
  required a full staff to work them
• Now Fly by wire systems are the most
  common. Computers do most the flying.

• Guidance
• Measures the condition of the aircraft
• Outer Loop
• Does not actually guide the aircraft
• Feeds the values into the control loop
