4
Goals
  • Recognize the Need for EMS Research
  • View Research as Necessary for the Improvement of
    Patient Care

5
Goals
  • Recognize the Need for EMS Research
  • Recommendation 5-The efforts of the EMS
    professionals, delivery systems, academic
centers, and public policy makers should be
organized to support and apply the results of
    research
  • View Research as Necessary for the Improvement of
    Patient Care
  • Recommendation 6-EMS professionals of all levels
should hold themselves to higher standards of
    requiring evidence before implementing new
    procedures, devices, or drugs
  • Recommendation 7-There should be standardized
data collection methods at local, regional, and
national levels, These data must be devoid of
    information that allows individual patient
identification. All EMS provider agencies should
adopt the Uniform Prehospital Data Elements for
    data collection

Our Goal/Format/Ground Rules
  • We Talk (5-7 minutes/recommendation)
  • Brief overview of the recommendation and the
    challenges.
  • You Talk (10 minutes/recommendation)
  • We listen
  • Record your ideas on how to address these
    challenges

8
Recognize the Need for EMS Research
  • Problem
  • In GOOD Research there is a delay from new
discovery until placed into EMS practice
  • Negative impact on patient care, and perpetuates
    erroneous or ineffective practice
  • EMS professionals are not educated to evaluate
    research (dont see the need)

9
Recommendation 5
  • The efforts of the EMS professionals, delivery
systems, academic centers, and public policy
makers should be organized to support and apply
    the results of research

10
Recommendation 5
  • NHTSA adopt curriculum
  • National Fire Academy continue courses
  • Feds develop a course for EMS administrative
    officers
  • Develop core curriculum, of basic research
principals, for levels of EMS providers

11
Recommendation 5
  • Accrediting agencies of EMS education programs
adopt research as a key component of curricula
  • Academic intuitions develop training pathways for
    EMS professional to do research
  • EMS agencies and academic intuitions partner in
    research activities

12
Recommendation 5
  • Barriers
  • Change a cultural history
  • System must make a commitment for change and
    develop partnerships
  • EMS professionals, both providers and
administrators need to see the positives in
    research
  • EMS educators teaching research

13
View Research as Necessary for the Improvement of
Patient Care
  • EMS organizations and agencies of the federal
government have an obligation to promote the
development of a culture within EMS organizations
    that values and supports research

14
Recommendation 6
  • EMS professionals of all levels should hold
themselves to higher standards of requiring
    evidence before implementing new procedures,
    devices, or drugs

15
Recommendation 6
  • Barriers
  • Culture of EMS
  • Commitment of Systems
  • Education
  • Medical Directors and Policy Makers

16
Create Reliable Information Systems
  • Problem
  • EMS short time of delivery
  • Lack of accurate identification
  • Each delivery system may have limited numbers of
    critically ill patients annually
  • Lack of standardized data collection

17
Recommendation 7
  • There should be standardized data collection
methods at local, regional, and national levels,
These data must be devoid of information that
allows individual patient identification. All EMS
provider agencies should adopt the Uniform
Prehospital Data Elements for data collection

18
Recommendation 7
  • NHTSA sponsor revision of Prehospital Data
Elements (PDE) at least every 10 years
  • State Lead EMS agencies require PDE, report to
    national EMS data repository

19
Recommendation 7
  • Federal agencies promote development and
maintenance of national EMS data repository

20
Recommendation 7
  • Barriers
  • Differing data definitions
  • Inadequate hardware and software infrastructure
  • Data linkages
  • Statistical implications of large databases
