3.2.1 Wiretapping

• Started before the telephone was invented (using
  the telegraph)
• 1928 Supreme court for wiretapping by
  law-enforcement
• 1934 Supreme court against all wiretapping unless
  authorized

3.2.3 Systems for interception

• Carnivore
• FBIs system for intercepting e-mail
• Installed on a suspects ISP
• Can potentially be used to obtain unfiltered
  traffic (meaning any other persons email who
  uses the same ISP)

• Created and operated by the NSA
• NSA has declined to confirm or deny its existence
• Works in partnership with 7 other countries
• Used to intercept satellite communications
  (satellite photos, lists of names, phone numbers,
  etc.)
