Title: Making Sense of Your PSAT Scores

1
Making Sense of Your PSAT Scores
  • Ms. Talley

2
Convert Your Score
  • Make your 2-digit PSAT scores comparable to the
    3-digit SAT scores
  • Find your PSAT Critical Reading Score
  • Find your PSAT Math Score
  • Add a 0 to the end of each score
  • Add your 3-digit reading score to your math
    score, for a TOTAL score.

3
Bright Futures Requirements
  • You need a
  • 1270 for 100 tuition scholarship
  • 970 for 75 tuition scholarship
  • OR
  • 440 Reading, 440 Math, and 300 Writing in order
to be eligible for 75 tuition

4
Compare Your Scores to FCAT
  • If youve failed the FCAT 3 times, but have a 410
Reading/370 Math, you MIGHT be able to use the
SAT (or ACT) scores to replace FCAT in the 12th
    grade.
  • This is something that is decided by the
legislature annually, so it might change.

5
So how do my scores measure up?
  • On the following slides, you will find the scores
for the Middle 50 of students that were
accepted to state universities in Florida last
    year.
  • Keep in mind They only used Math and Reading in
the past, but they will be adding Writing scores
    for future totals.

About the Scores
  • One way to think of these Middle Range scores
is to look at the bottom score for each
university and assume that approximately 75 of
the students who got accepted last year had this
    score or better.
  • 25 had less than the bottom score.

9
Make A Plan
  • Think of where you want to go to college and what
scholarship youd like to aim for.
  • Then, make a plan to remediate your weak areas by
doing any of all of the following

10
The Plan
  • Look up your PSAT results online to see your weak
areas correct answers (using your code and
website that is located on the report you got
back today its on the bottom inside right).
  • Go to www.Collegeboard.com and www.ACTstudent.org
to look for courses and material to improve scores

11
The Plan
  • Sign up in guidance for one of the mini-courses
offered at Lincoln (5 for 3 session the week
    before the SAT/ACT).
  • Contact private companies that offer SAT/ACT test
    prep courses (at various costs)
  • Take an SAT/ACT prep class through Florida
    Virtual School (free)

12
The Plan
  • Purchase a review book (some come with CDs) at a
local bookstore or online bookstore and start
    practicing
  • My College QuickStart Follow steps on the
front cover of PSAT report for a free
college/career planning kit, a personalized SAT
study plan, plus info about colleges, majors, and
    careers.
