3Categories of Generators
- Households
- CESQG (Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity
Generators) - Generate less than 100 kg of hazardous waste per
month - SQG (Small Quantity Generators)
- Generate more than 100 kg but less than 1000 kg
of hazardous waste per month - LQG (Large Quantity Generators)
- Generate more than 1000 kg of hazardous waste

5Local governments may sponsor collection
events which allow households and CESQG to drop
off their electronic waste for recycling .
Pennsylvania law prohibits SQG and LQG from
participating in these events. Please contact a
licensed recycler to arrange for proper disposal.
6Options for properly disposing of your electronic
waste
- Donate the items to your local schools or
non-profit agencies. (Make sure all of your data
has been properly removed prior to donating your
items) - Repair or upgrade existing system.
- Recycle the item through a collection system.
7What type of products are typically accepted?
8An estimated 500 million computers will become
obsolete between 1992 2007, resulting in over 6
billion pounds of plastic and 1.5 billion pounds
of lead.
9Problem with Electronic waste
- A typical PC contains the following components
- 25 Glass
- 23 Plastic
- 21 Iron
- 14 Aluminum
- 7 Copper
- 6 Lead
- 2 Zinc
- 2 Other metals
1070 of heavy metals in landfills come from
electronic waste.
11Consumer electronics make up about 40 of the
lead in landfills.
12LEAD
- Lead accumulates in your blood, bones, muscles
and fat. - Exposure may cause damage to kidneys, liver,
brain, nerves and may lead to osteoporosis. - Excessive exposure may cause
- Seizures, metal retardations, behavioral
disorders, memory problems, mood changes, high
blood pressure and increases heart disease.
13Fluorescent lights contain mercury and mercury
containing devices.
- 46 Fluorescent Lamps were recovered during this
four (4) hour event in Fleetwood.
14MERCURY
- Mercury is toxic through inhalation, ingestion,
skin absorption - Immediate Exposure effects
- Pneumonitis, Chest Pains, Shortness of Breath and
Coughing. - Long Term effects
- Nervous system impact, reproductive and
developmental impact
15All of the electronic waste is separated by
category and shrink wrapped at the collection
site to be shipped to their Allentown facility
for recycling.
