The Last Supper
  • Leonardo Da Vinci
  • 1498
  • The painting is life-sized. It is on a full wall
of the church Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.
  • During World War II, the church was bombed. Only
the wall with this painting survived.

6
Understanding
  • We sit down before the picture in order to have
something done to us, not that we may do things
with it. The first demand any work of art makes
upon us is surrender. Look. Listen. Receive.
Get yourself out of the way.
  • C.S. Lewis

7
An Artists View
  • Makoto Fujimura
  • When looking at The Last Supper, our attention
first goes to Philip, then to Jesus.
  • Jesus is at the center.

Introducing Philip
  • ?43? The next day Jesus decided to leave for
Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, Follow
    me.
  • ?44? Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the
town of Bethsaida. ?45? Philip found Nathanael
and told him, We have found the one Moses wrote
about in the Law, and about whom the prophets
also wroteJesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
  • ?46? Nazareth! Can anything good come from
    there? Nathanael asked.
  • Come and see, said Philip. NIV, John 143-46

10
On Seeing God
  • ?8? Philip said, Lord, show us the Father and
that will be enough for us.
  • ?9? Jesus answered Dont you know me, Philip,
even after I have been among you such a long
time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, Show us the Father?
  • NIV John 148-9

11
Greater Things?
  • ?12? I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith
in me will do what I have been doing. He will do
even greater things than these, because I am
going to the Father. ?13? And I will do whatever
you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring
glory to the Father. ?14? You may ask me for
anything in my name, and I will do it.
  • NIV John 1412-14

12
Capturing the Moment of Betrayal
  • I tell you the truth, one of you is going to
    betray me.

Scale
  • The painting dominates the small space of the
room enclosing it. The viewer is forced almost
to enter into the painting and become a part of
    the story it tells.
  • The picture of the betrayal painted by Leonardo
starts with Philip, and ends in a moneybag in
    Judas hand.

16
Seeing
  • Artists often use light to reveal what they want
    the viewer to see.
  • The light is not coming from the windows.
  • The source of light is Jesus face.
  • The light from Jesus reflects on all of the
    disciples except Judas.
  • The vanishing point for the geometry of the
picture is on the forehead of Jesus.

18
Tension of Betrayal
  • Philips head breaks the horizontal plane.
  • The other figure that breaks this plane is Judas.
  • This is what draws our eyes first to Philip, then
to Jesus and across to Judas.

At the Table
  • Most paintings of the last supper from this era
    show Judas leaving the room.
  • Leonardo places Judas near Jesus, directly in
    front of Peter.
  • In the size and scale of the painting, and the
arrangement of the elements, he places the viewer
    at the table also.

21
Observations
  • Jesus is at the center.
  • Light from Jesus reflects from the disciples
    faces.
  • The betrayer is dark holding tight to money
    (self-interest).
  • The viewer is made to feel as if he or she is in
    the scene.
  • Philip Come and see.

Glorious Ministry
  • ?7? Now if the ministry that brought death, which
was engraved in letters on stone, came with
glory, so that the Israelites could not look
steadily at the face of Moses because of its
glory, fading though it was, ?8? will not the
ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious?
  • NIV 2 Corinthians 37-8

24
Bold
  • ?12? Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are
    very bold.
  • NIV 2 Corinthians 312

25
Reflected Glory
  • ?18? And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect
the Lords glory, are being transformed into his
likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes
from the Lord, who is the Spirit. NIV 2
    Corinthians 318

26
Blinded
  • ?4? The god of this age has blinded the minds of
unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of
the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the
    image of God.
  • NIV 2 Corinthians 44

27
Light
  • ?5? For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus
Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants
for Jesus sake. ?6? For God, who said, Let
light shine out of darkness, made his light
shine in our hearts to give us the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
    Christ.
  • NIV 2 Corinthians 35-6

28
Reflecting
  • ?7? But we have this treasure in jars of clay to
show that this all-surpassing power is from God
    and not from us.
  • NIV 2 Corinthians 47
