History of the NASPA International Exchange
Program
  • In September, 1996 the first NASPA international
    exchange occurred. A NASPA delegation from the
    U.S. visited France, hosted by The Centre
    National des Oeuvres Universitaires et Scolaires
    (CNOUS).

Goals of the International Exchange Program
  • Expand knowledge related to the history, culture,
    geography, economy, religion, educational systems
    and peoples of countries around the world
  • Foster sensitivity, appreciation and
    understanding of diversity
  • Share information on education, policies and
    practices that support and encourage student
    learning and development

  • Provide opportunities for student affairs
    professionals to travel to another country, visit
    institutions of higher education and meet higher
    education colleagues with similar interests
  • Meet students in higher education and learn about
    their goals, needs and issues related to study
    abroad opportunities
  • Develop and nurture relationships with colleagues
    in student affairs and services around the world
  • Explore avenues for collaboration and cooperative
    agreements among institutions in the home and
    host country

Objectives of the Exchange Program
  • Provide an opportunity to learn about higher
    education from the host and visiting country
    delegates and how student services, programs and
    activities are provided and funded
  • Meet with students at host institutions/countries
    to develop an understanding of how students in
    other countries differ from the delegates home
    country
  • Visit important cultural and historical sites in
    the host country
  • Exchange ideas and share information on programs,
    services and activities

Outcomes
  • Exchange participants will learn and be able to
    articulate and share
  • Educational, socio-economic, political, religious
    and cultural differences that contribute to a
    countrys uniqueness
  • How student services are provided and funded
  • Trends, challenges, and new programs
  • Mutual issues as well as issues that are specific
    to the host country and host/visited institutions
  • The level of interest expressed by students in
    participating in study abroad programs and the
    basis for students academic and geographical
    preferences
