affect our customs in a negative way. - Middle
Eastern religious leader
Political and religious leaders believe they are
protecting citizens from numerous cultural
threats, when wandering in the virtual world.
Yet, they are simultaneously preventing citizens
from a wealth of knowledge and information. Conten
t that is considered inappropriate according to
religious, cultural, and social standards --
pornography, gambling, alcohol, dating, and
nudity
19USE OF INTERNET DESPITE RESTRICTIONS
While a lot of content is filtered, it is
difficult to filter group discussions and emails.
Thus, most people spend the most significant
amount of their time online chatting or using
email. Blogging has also become increasingly
popular, as the region greatly restricts
expression in other journalistic mediums such as
newspapers-- currently over 75,000 bloggers in
Iran alone.
