  • Stantec, founded in 1954, provides professional
design and consulting services in planning,
    engineering, architecture, surveying, economics,
and project management. Continually striving to
    balance economic, environmental, and social
responsibilities, we are recognized as a
world-class leader and innovator in the delivery
of sustainable solutions. We support public and
private sector clients in a diverse range of
markets in the infrastructure and facilities
sector at every stage, from initial concept and
financial feasibility to project completion and
    beyond.
  • In simple terms, the world of Stantec is the
water we drink, the roadways we travel, the
buildings we visit, the industries in which we
work, and the neighborhoods we call home.
  • Our services are offered through over 6,500
employees operating out of more than 100
    locations in North America.
  • Stantec is One Team providing Infinite Solutions.

Math in the Civil Engineering Field
  • The Civil Engineering Field uses Mathematics from
basic arithmetic to complex calculus equations.
  • Examples
  • Estimating Cost
  • Estimating Areas
  • Estimating Volumes
  • Solving Complex Hydraulics (Fluids such as water)
problems where no direct solution is achievable

7
Vocabulary/Formulas(For todays Demo)
  • New Vocabulary
  • Channel
  • Hydraulics
  • Disturbance
  • Slope
  • Spoils

Formulas
Ratio and Proportion Slope in Civil Engineering
is shown as the horizontal change per unit of
Vertical change. Therefore, a 21 slope has 2
units horizontally 1 unit vertically

What is a Channel?
9
What can happen?
  • 100 year storm. These vehicles were swept
into a wash near the intersection of Boulder
Highway and Sahara Avenue in Las Vegas during the
"100 year storm" flood event on July 8, 1999, so
called because of the one percent chance that an
event this large would occur in any year. The
storm just missed qualifying as one of the top
ten storms for precipitation in a 24-hour period
in Las Vegas since 1937 when official record
    keeping began.

Example
Your client has a project in the California
Mojave Desert. You decide that you will
construct flood channels to convey water runoff
to protect the development. If the channels are
a minimum of 5-feet deep, have a base of 10 feet,
and have 41 side slopes, what is the minimum
width of the channel surface disturbance?
  • To solve, we need to
  • Make simplifying assumptions
  • Make a sketch to help with the problem solving
  • Break the problem down to 3 components to
    determine the channel width.
  • The left channel bank will have a disturbance of
    5 x 4 20
  • The channel bottom will have a disturbance of 10
    (given)
  • The right channel bank will have a disturbance
    of 5 x 4 20 (notice symmetry)
  • The total channel disturbance is given by the sum
    of all 3 parts 20 10 20 50

14
Guided Practice
What is the minimum disturbance considering the
spoils assuming that they are placed on one side
of the channel bank and have the same geometrical
shape as the channel?
The steps used to solve this problem are exactly
the same as the example.
15
Independent Practice
As a practice exercise, lets say that we need to
minimize the disturbance by steepening the side
slopes of the channel. This may require channel
bank protection and may increase the cost of the
channel. What would the total channel disturbance
be if the depth of the channel and spoils is to
be increased to 6 feet and the side slopes
steepened to 31. While everyone is working
on this, I need two volunteers to solve the
problems on the board.
