PURPOSE
  • The purpose of an OHSMS is to enable an
organization to improve its occupational health
    and safety performance.
  • An OHSMS provides a framework for developing and
    implementing improvements in occupational health
    and safety.

3
Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series
(OHSAS) 18000 provides
  • Specifications for OHSMS OHSAS 18001,
  • and
  • Guidelines for the implementation of OHSAS 18001
    OHSAS 18002

4
PLAN DO CHECK - ACT
  • OHSMS follows the Plan Do Check Act Cycle
with a concurrent emphasis on continuous
    improvement.

5
Seamless Integration
  • This model fits in neatly with the structure of
    other management systems such as
  • ISO 14001 (Environment), and
  • ISO 9001 (Business/Quality),
  • and therefore can be integrated seamlessly.

6
Standards
  • In addition to OHSAS 18000 series, there are
other international and national standards and
    guidelines, such as
  • ANSI/AIHA Z10-2005,
  • ILO-OSH 2001,
  • CAN/CSA Z1000-06

7
Canadian Standard
  • CAN/CSA-Z1000, OHSMS standard was developed with
equal representation from Business, Labour and
Regulators from across Canada, and is consistent
with ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10, and
    ILO-OSH 2001.

8
Continuous Progression
  • An OHSMS is a continuous progression of
    compliance, improvement and prevention.
  • It is also an objective basis for verifying a
companys claims about its OHS performance.

9
The Key to Success
  • The key to a successful OHSMS is,
  • having documented procedures that are
implemented and maintained in daily business
    operations, and
  • Including appropriate monitoring and review to
ensure effective functioning and to identify and
    implement corrective measures.

10
CCOHS OHSMS
  • CCOHS OHS Management System is a web based
system that can be used by any organization
small, medium or large, with extensive support
and assistance from CCOHS for its implementation.
