What is a Heatstroke
  • Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to
regulate its temperature. The body's temperature
rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and
the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature
may rise to 106F or higher within 10 to 15
minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent
disability if emergency treatment is not
    provided.

Recognizing Heat Strokes / Symptoms
  • An extremely high body temperature (above 103F,
    orally)
  • Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating)
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Throbbing headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Unconsciousness

  • Sometimes a victim's muscles will begin to twitch
uncontrollably as a result of heat stroke. If
this happens, keep the victim from injuring
himself, but do not place any object in the mouth
and do not give fluids. If there is vomiting,
make sure the airway remains open by turning the
victim on his or her side.

Causes of Heatstroke
  • Our bodies produce a tremendous amount of
internal heat and we normally cool ourselves by
sweating and radiating heat through the skin.
However, in certain circumstances, such as
extreme heat, high humidity or constant activity
in the hot sun, this cooling system may begin to
fail, allowing heat to build up to dangerous
    levels.

Treatment of a heatstroke
  • Get the victim or yourself to a shady area.
  • Cool the victim or yourself rapidly using
whatever methods you can. For example, get the
victim or yourself in a tub of cool water place
the victim or yourself in a cool shower spray
the victim or yourself with cool water from a
garden hose or if the humidity is low, wrap the
victim in a cool, wet sheet and fan him or her
    non-stop.

12
Keep water with you at all times
13
  • Monitor body temperature, and continue cooling
efforts until the body temperature drops to
    101-102F.
  • Do not give the victim alcohol to drink.
  • Get medical assistance as soon as possible.
  • Get the person indoors.
  • Remove clothing and gently apply cool water to
the skin followed by fanning to stimulate
    sweating.
  • Apply ice packs to the groin and armpits.
  • Have the person lie down in a cool area with
    their feet slightly elevated

Prevention
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored
    clothing
  • Limit vigorous activity during hot, humid weather
  • Drink plenty of water, before, during, and after
exercise. Drink more than you need to satisfy
your thirst. Also, remember drinks such as soda
and coffee have caffeine and can actually rob
your body of fluids so drink these sparingly.
  • Avoid alcohol before, during, and immediately
after you exercise. Alcohol causes you to lose
    more fluid than you consume.

16
Animals can get heatstroke too!
17
Conclusion
  • In conclusion, heatstroke's should be taken very
seriously. Many people underestimate the severity
of heatstrokes. They are life threatening and
again are very serious. So when playing sports or
other activities in the hot humid sun make sure
that you drink plenty of liquids such as water.
