• Esperanza learned that change is not that bad and
  that work is hard.

Plot

• Esperanzas 13th birthday was coming up
• Her daddy dies from bandits
• She moves to California
• Her mama gets sick
• In the end everything gets in to place

Setting

• The setting is in California in a poor community.
  There is people striking to get better land, and
  more money. In the story you can tell Mexicans
  come last, there is a lot of race problems.

Characters

• Papa was killed in the beginning but he still
  seems very kind. He gave land away to peasants
  who did not own much. He looks like a country
  man and is very wealthy. But in the beginning he
  died leaving everything.
• Esperanza is a Mexican girl with tan skin, brown
  almond eyes, and dark hair. When she was six she
  thought that the earth could breath. Most of the
  story she was thirteen. She is a really kind
  hearted person who helps people in many ways.
• Lupe and Pepe or about one year old and there
  parents are Juan and Josefina. Esperanza and
  Isabel watch the babies daily. They seem to like
  outside because Esperanza takes teem out to play
  a lot. They are so, so cute!!

  smaller. I think means to disappear. The
  definition is to step over.
• The wagon pulled out of the barn and the guavas
  shifted, then settled. I think it is a type
  fruit. The definition is a small, sweet, yellow
  or pink fruit.
• But papas influence was gone. I think it means
  he is gone. The definition is the act or power
  producing an affect.
• She knew her face was red and blotchy. I think
  it means sickish. The definition is spotted.
• Dried and brittle onion skins were everywhere. I
  think it means dead. The definition is cracked
  or snapped.

• Esperanzas life may seem a bit difficult. But
  it is really not. Now I know her daddy dies (bad
  thing). She learn character traits (good thing).
  So the author was probable writing bad things
  and good things and they even out.
