Title: AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION

1
AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION At the same time the
Industrial Revolution was taking place, a
revolution in agriculture was also happening.
The factory workers needed large amounts of food.
Therefore new machines and methods were
introduced in farming to increase production.
2
In the 17th Century, each farm family took care
of all of their farming needs. By 1750 large
landlords were buying most of the small farms.
On these farms agricultural methods were
improved. Looking for profits, wasteland was
turned into farmland, new tools and ways of
farming were invented.
3
Charles Townsend introduced the system of crop
rotation. At first he was laughed at but soon
crop yield increased by 30.

Another man by the name of Jethro Tull invented
machines like the plow and the drill machine used
for planting. These men helped to start the
Agricultural Revolution. The increased
productivity enabled farms to feed more workers
in the towns. It made it possible for cities to
handle a growing population.
5
Another factor was the opening of vast new lands
to farm. Especially in the U.S., Russia and
Australia. This enabled farmers to supply more
produce to the industrialized world.
6
Agriculture had developed at a pace that equaled
the Industrial Revolution. Machinery was
developed that could do the jobs of many men.
Automation was a key component in increasing
production. Automated feeders, waterers,
ventilators and other new inventions made it
possible for farmers to manage huge farms. New
types of feed, fertilizer, and pesticides gave
the farmer every advantage he could get over
nature. The future of farming still has many new
ideas to explore.
