  • Born Abdurazzack Achmat in March 21 1962,
    Johannesburg

The main challenges he faced
  • Schoolboy in the 1970s in a segregated Cape Town
    township caught up in the violent student
    campaign against apartheid. He helped to set fire
    to his own school and was arrested and detained
    five times. incompleted high school
  • For 10 years he operated as an underground
    activist for the banned African National
    Congress, evading the secret police and
    organising youth resistance groups."
  • "The disease was regarded as taboo"

His achievements include
  • Series of NGOs providing educational support to
    disadvantaged youth, skills training for school
    leavers and in the health sector.
  • Foundation of TAC (Treatmnet Action Campaign),
    the most well-known and successful AIDS activist
    group in South Africa
  • Initiated the National Coalition for Gay and
    Lesbian Equality
  • Lobby for allowing the production and import of
    generic drugs for HIV/AIDS.

Also, did you know that
  • Achmat publicly refused to take AIDS medications
    until all who needed them had access to them
  • On August 18, 2006, Achmat was one of 44 TAC
    activists arrested for occupying provincial
    government offices in Cape Town
  • Without a campaign that makes treatment available
    to all, 5 to 6 million South Africans will die of
    AIDS by 2010.
  • Married to Dallie Weyers, his fellow activist
