Title: Understanding Landslides:

1
Understanding Landslides
  • Junior High Style!

The Lesson Plan
2
Objectives
  • Design an experiment representing
  • an assortment of landslides
  • how different materials have varying results
  • how scientists predict where landslides can occur

3
What is a Landslide?
  • A landslide is a rapid downward sliding, flowing,
or falling of rock, soil, and/or snow/ice under
    the influence of gravity.

4
What kind of variables trigger a
landslide?
5
Different Types of Landslides
What kind of Landslide will your group attempt
to create?
6
Steps to creating your own Landslide
  • Completely open the top of the juice/milk carton
  • On one face of the carton, cut 3/4 of the way
    down
  • Fold over the excess flap
  • Fill carton halfway with material
  • Add water to material while flattening against
the side to create the slope
  • Once material is soaked with water (without
material moving) add books to balance carton to
    create an angle of repose

The steepest angle that a loose material can
assume without moving down slope.
SLOWLY
  • Add additional water to create a landslide

7
????s to think about ????
  • Where did you choose to pour the water?
  • What kind of results did you see?
  • How much water was used to create the slide?
  • How high was your angle?
  • How fast did the material move?
  • If you changed the angle of repose would there be
    a different result?

8
Landslides
Mudslides
New Streams
9
Steps to take around A possible landslide
  • Evacuate if possible
  • Contact your local fire, police, or public works
    department
  • Inform neighbors
  • Stay Alert and stay AWAKE
  • Listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate
moving debris (i.e.. trees cracking, boulders
    knocking together)
  • If near a stream or channel look for sudden
increase or decrease in water flow and change
    from clear to muddy water

10
How can Scientists Predict Where Landslides Occur?
  • Group Discussion
  • What are three out of the four possible
  • criteria for a landslide?
