Math News
- In math weve been counting objects learning one
to one correspondence, manipulating pattern
blocks, and comparing sizes. - Our math program is based on a research done by
the University of Chicago School of Mathematics
Project. One of the strengths of the program is
that it provides read-world problem solving
opportunities. As you walk home, ride in the car,
or talk with your child try these activities to
provide him/her opportunities to demonstrate an
understanding of a new math concept - Compare objects using words like
length/longer/shorter/the same - Count objects-forks on the table, shoes a the
door, windows in the car - Find zeros in numbers on signs, food packages,
menus - Describe shapes in terms of the number of sides,
points-corners - Providing children with opportunities to be
successful builds confidence. - Read the math letter attached please.

Writers Workshop
TAS has set a school wide goal of improving
writing skills. In KG, we are working on that
same goal. The kids are writing daily. Their
writing reflects their knowledge of letters and
letter sounds. Like might look like l or lk.
Remember, this is what they know about letters
and letter sounds. It is temporary spelling.
Right not its not about spelling, its about the
writing.
Literacy Highlights
Weve laughed at David Shannons books, shared
coconut over Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and chased
the Gingerbread Man all over school. Books are
certainly our friends! This week we will read The
Big Block of Chocolate and next week well read
Noisy Nora. The kids have started book shopping.
On Mondays students get to pick books to put in
their own bag to read all week. The kids take
one or two of those books home each night to
share with their family. (Return them daily
please.) We hope you are enjoying the shared
book. When your child listens to the story, ask
him or her what might happen next and then check
to see if the prediction is right.

Mrs. Winters Message
Our best faces?
Your kids deserve a round of applause. The first
week went well and they seem to be coming
together as a community of learners. They are
kind, caring, and very inquisitive. You have to
admit, they are a cute bunch! Thank you for
sharing your most valuable possession
with Alison and me. Library books may be
returned to the library anytime. Children are
free to checkout books daily. Remember, kids get
dirty at school painting, playing, and having a
good time. Send your child in play clothes each
day.

3Estimating Jar
- September 3, 2007
- Dear Parents,
- We will be starting a new math home/
school connection this week by introducing the
Estimating Jar. Since estimating is part of the
Everyday Mathematics program we will be
practicing our estimating skills each Friday
using our Estimating Jar. The plastic jar will
be sent home each Monday with a different
student. The students family will then help to
fill the jar with something from home. Some
ideas would be to fill it with small toy cars,
socks, marbles, beans, or crackers. In the
beginning, students will put up to 20 items in
the jar. As our estimating skills improve, we
will increase the number of items in the jar.
When the jar comes your way please return it by
Thursday so that we are ready to go on Friday
morning. - Remember
- ? The jar comes back on Thursdays.
- ? No more than 20 items in the jar
- ? Fill it with things kids can count
easily! - All fifteen KG kids in room 1A44 thank you for
supporting our math program! - KG Kids in 1A44
