Discipline No-No Number 10

• Do not deny a child the right to go to the
  bathroom. This can have disastrous consequences.
  If a child is constantly asking, conference with
  the child. Call the parent but dont just say
  no.

Discipline No-No Number 9

• Do not leave your class unattended, even for a
  minute. You do not want to tell your principal
  that you were out of the room when the fight that
  broke Tims nose started. Call the office or a
  teacher you know on conference if you have to
  leave the room.

Discipline No-No Number 8

• Dont confuse discipline with academics. Giving
  detentions for not having homework is not OK.
  The only time that the two intersect is when
  cheating (that you can prove) occurs.

• Do not tell your students about the club you went
  to last night. If you should run into one of
  your students at a club, dont buy him/her a
  drink. And never, never, go to school in the
  same clothes two days in a row because you didnt
  go home to change.

• Dont get into a power struggle with a student.
  No one wins. If a student doesnt follow a
  request, calmly talk to the student as privately
  as possible and offer a choice of doing as you
  say or being sent to the office (or calling for
  someone to come help if that is needed). Give
  them a minute or two to choose or comply, and
  then offer the choice again, requesting an answer.

• Dont write discipline referrals in a red pen
  with a force so hard that you can feel it on the
  bottom of all 4 copies. Parents will wonder if
  you need an anti-anxiety prescription.

• If students are talking while you are teaching,
  they are not learning. Dont allow this to
  happen.

• Dont put your chairs in rows that go all the way
  to the back of the class you have to be able to
  get to students quickly. A good desk formation
  is diagrammed below.

• Dont scream. While it is OK to judiciously
  raise your voice on carefully selected, rare
  occasions, it is not OK to lose your temper on a
  daily basis.

  students. They may just turn the tables!
