• Hemingway used the sentence You are all a lost
  generation. Used in The Sun Always Rises
• The people of the lost generation were usually
  soldiers of Englishmen, and Americans who were
  affected by the war
• He was fascinated by the brutality and violence
  of the war and the way it challenged mens
  traditional values.

Biography

• Born July 21 1899 2 July 1961
• He worked hard on the books that he wrote, adding
  certain attributes to his characters, ex. Hard
  Drinker, Big-game hunter, fearless soldier, etc.
• Recognized spokesperson of the lost generation
• He won the Nobel prize in 1954, then slipped into
  illness and eventually killed himself with a
  favorite shotgun.

• Paris capital city of the Lost Generation
• Home of succession of expatriate literary
  reviews, and thus attracted many writers.
• Hemingway was dedicated and avoided distractions
  when he was writing.
• Scott Fitzgerald succumbed to alcohol and the
  partying lifestyle
• Hemingway was a raging alcoholic though.

• The Sun Also Rises- group of expatriates who
  suffered physically and emotionally during the
  war. The book describes the aimless existence
  which resembles a whole generation.
• A Farewell to Arms- Tragically terminated love
  affair between an American soldier and an English
  nurse. The bleakness of war suggested the
  hopelessness people felt.
• Death in the Afternoon- It reveals his interest
  in bull-fighting. It contains bitter and
  disillusioned writing that dealt with emotional
  breakdown and impotence.
