At Birth

• The first words a baby should hear are those of
  the Adhaan
• They are whispered into the right ear of the
  child by Dad
• They are given something sweet to taste usually
  the juice of a Date.

• God is great, there is no God but Allah.
  Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Come to prayer

7 days after being born

• Babys head is shaved
• The hair is weighed and the parents give the
  equivalent weight in silver to charity
• Boys are circumcised
• The babys name is chosen
• Aqeeqah is also carried out

• A lamb is sacrificed and the meat is given to
  relatives, neighbours and the poor
• In Britain, hygiene laws mean that lamb has to be
  ordered from the butcher

• In the past female children were less important
  than boy babies
• Pidyon Haben is performed for the first male
  child

Day 8 - boys

• Brit Milah is performed
• The baby is placed on the knee of a male
  relative
• He is known as the Sandek his job is to keep
  the baby still
• The ceremony is performed by a Mohel
• The baby is given his name at this ceremony

• Obviously a girl cant have a Brit Milah!
• So her name is given to her at the first time she
  goes to the synagogue to hear the Torah
• It is important to keep the name a secret until
  the public name giving

• Jatakarma is performed Gods name is whispered
  in the babys ear and honey is put in their mouth

• Nishkarmana babys first trip out
• Annaprasana first taste of solid food
• Karnavedha ear piercing
• Mundan first hair cut
• Head shaving to remove impurity

At Birth

• Naming ceremony performed in front of the Guru
  Granth Sahib (holy book)
• Drops of Amrit (sugar and water) are placed on
  the babys lips (mum drinks the rest)
• Baby is named by opening the holy book the name
  is decided by the opening letter of the first
  hymn on the page opened

At Birth

• A boy will have the name Singh (lion) added to
  his name
• A girl will have the name Kaur (princess)
• The family is presented with the cloth that
  covers the holy book (known as Romala)
• Special pudding the Karah Parashad is given to
  everyone at the ceremony
• Baby is given a Kara small wrist band.
