Sudan

• A 21 year civil war killed 1.5 million and ended
  in 2005.
• There continues to be violence in the western
  region of Darfur.
• 2.5 million people have fled their homes and live
  in refugee camps with poor sanitation.
• Vehicles bringing aid are often attacked or
  hijacked.
• Life expectancy is 57 years.

Malawi

• Half the population live in poverty and on less
  than a dollar a day (around 65p)
• Country often faces drought and heavy rainfall
  which causes food shortages.
• 1 in 7 are affected by HIV/AIDs
• Life expectancy is only 40 years.

Zimbabwe

• Has been ruled by a corrupt dictator Robert
  Mugabe since 1980.
• Life expectancy is only 37 years.
• The country faces long running drought.
• Many farms have been taken off white farmers and
  given to inexperienced blacks causing a drop in
  food production.
• In 2005 the government demolished a number of
  slums in major towns/cities leaving 700,000
  homeless and without jobs.
