Title: Adjustments of laboratory environment with EDGE implemented

1
Adjustments of laboratory environment with EDGE
implemented
  • Anne Engman, Ulrika Gustafsson

2
Background
  • The development of third generation cellular
    systems is under progress.
  • EDGE ( Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution)
is one of them. When EDGE eventually is in use,
it must be tested at least with the same aspects
    as GSM has been tested.
  • As background to the thesis it was necessary to
get familiar with GSM, GPRS, 3G and of course
    EDGE.

3
Assignment Specification
  • This thesis will investigate how the introduction
of EDGE is going to affect the activity of PLMBTS
    laboratory.
  • In order to investigate the affects of EDGE there
has to be a study of the present laboratory
    testing system.
  • Problems regarding the laboratory, which has to
    be considered are
  • Define existing test procedures.
  • Which test procedures are affected?
  • How will they be changed?
  • Can testing be done with present tools?
  • If not, what kinds of measures are needed?
  • Are the computer resources adequate?
  • If not, what kinds of measures are needed?
  • Problems regarding technical description of EDGE
that has to be considered are
  • Influence of EDGE on the radio network.
  • Influence of higher data rates.
  • EDGE implemented in BSS (BTS, BSC).

5
GPRSGeneral Packet Radio Services
  • It is a standardized packet switched data service
    for GSM based system
  • It is designed to work within the existing GSM
    infrastructure with packet switched nodes
  • Several GPRS users can share one channel
  • GPRS allows roaming between different PLMNs
  • GPRS uses GSM nodes and adds new nodes

6
EDGE
  • EDGE operates at 384 kbps and support wireless
multimedia services based on Internet Protocol
    (IP)
  • The introduction of EDGE in GSM phase 2 offers a
new physical layer that enhances existing
    services like GPRS and HSCSD.
  • EGPRS enhanced GPRS offers up to 473.6 kbps in
the same bandwidth of 200kHz, (new modulation
technique and error tolerant transmission methods
    combined with improved link adaptation
    mechanisms).
  • The new modulation technique 8PSK will be used in
    combination with GMSK.
  • ECSD Enhanced Circuit Switched Data is an
extension of the HCSD concept for GSM employing
    8PSK modulation.

7
Modulation
  • Modulation type in GSM is GSMK
  • 8PSK, a linear modulation

8
Channel coding
  • GPRS
  • EDGE

9
LQCLink Quality Control
  • WHY?
  • Since 8PSK is more sensitive to noise and
interference than GMSK, there is a need to adapt
the used coding scheme to the interference
    situation.
  • HOW?
  • LQC provides each user with the maximum
throughput, by using the most appropriate coding
    scheme.

10
Implementation of EDGE
  • The implementation of EDGE in Ericsson GSM
network affects the BSC, BTS and OSS, through new
software and new EDGE TRUs (RBS 2000 macro base
    station series).
  • Only minor parts of the core network, SGSN and
    HLR are affected.

11
BSS Releases
12
BSS R9.1
  • BTS
  • EDGE sTRU
  • DXU21
  • AXE810
  • APT1.5
  • APG40
  • Positioning methods
  • E-OTD
  • A-GPS
  • BSC
  • QoS (Quality of Service and Scheduling)
  • Compact or High Capacity product family
  • BSC or BSC/TRC
  • Transceivers
  • AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate)
  • Full Rate
  • Half Rate
  • OSS

13
Abis Interface
ETSI
Ericsson
  • Existing limit of 16 kbps per TS is not
    sufficient.
  • In order to introduce EGPRS capabilities it must
be possible to allocate up to 64k on the Abis for
    an EGPRS capable TS.
  • Increased Capacity on Abis. The capacity on
Abis can be doubled by supporting 4 PCMs per RBS
    2000 instead of 2 .
  • The new DXU21 in RBS 2000 supports 4 transmission
    ports ( Ports A-D).
  • Network design solution description.
  • LAPD, saves signalling transmission resources.
  • The BSC - BTS interface.
  • Supports all the services offered to GSM users
    and subscribers.
  • It allows control of the radio equipment and
    frequency allocation in the BTS.
  • The definition of the interface follows a layered
    approach (similar to ISDN).

14
Upgrade of Test Tools
  • NetHawk Concurrent 3G/GPRS/EDGE/GSM Analysis,
    (1Q 2002).
  • WinFIOL 6.0 Will support APG40.
  • SATT/BSCSimII RBS Test Tool phase out, the last
version will not support test ofRBSs with IP-BSS
    or EDGE.
  • OSS R9.1 It is needed in all OSS network
    elements.
  • DXX Now it can also perform GPRS E1 Frame Relay
grooming to save expensive SGSN E1 Frame Relay
    ports and transmission costs.
  • TSS2200 supports the dynamic configuration of
    LAPD.
  • The TEMS portfolio will support all the 2.5G and
3G air interfaces wireless network will use in
the quest to make the mobile Internet a reality.
