NEW MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY
COMPOSITE AND SMART MATERIALS
2
Recent developments in materials have resulted in
materials which are lighter and stronger than
traditional materials such as wood and metal.
Materials have also been developed which have
SMART properties.
3
  • Many materials have been developed by mixing
  • together different materials to improve their
    properties
  • These materials are called
    .
  • Name three Common Materials which are COMPOSITES
  • PLYWOOD which has improved strength by gluing
    wood
  • with its grain at 90o to each other.
  • METAL ALLOY. Such as Stainless Steel which mixes
    iron with
  • . and ..
  • GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)

COMPOSITES
4
New COMPOSITE MATERIALS include COMPOSITE FIBRE
such as KEVLAR which is much stronger than steel
and much lighter.
5
COMPOSITE PRODUCTS ARE MADE BY LAYERING
COMPOSITE FIBRES WITH RESIN ON TO A FORMER
THEN UNDER PRESSURE HEATING UNTIL CURED
6
SMART MATERIALS Smart materials are materials
which can respond and change their properties
depending upon sensing external factors such as
Temperature, Current flow and Light levels. Such
SMART materials include Shape Memory Alloys
(SMA) These are alloys which have a memory and
despite what shape they are formed into will
return to their original shape when a current is
past through.
7
Light Emitting Materials These are materials such
as LEPs (Light Emitting Polymers) and LCDs
(Liquid Crystal Displays) which emit light or
darken when a current is passed through them.
8
Piezoelectric Materials These materials have the
ability to change electrical energy into movement

Electroactive Polymers (EAP) These lightweight
plastics act like muscles they can contract or
relax when a Current is past through
