What is No Child Left Behind?
  • An Act signed by President Bush in January 2002.
  • It reauthorized the existing Elementary and
    Secondary Education Act.
  • Federal funding to states for education purposes.
  • NCLB made the most sweeping changes in federal
    law regarding public schools in nearly 40 years.

NCLBs Goals
  • NCLB focuses on four principles
  • Accountability guaranteeing results
  • Parental Options choices for parents, hope for
    kids
  • Scientifically-based instruction proven methods
    with proven results
  • Flexibility federal funds for local control
  • Ultimately, improving reading skill and
    mathematical skill at the early grades is the
    main emphasis of NCLB.

NCLB is Working!
  • In reading, 9-year-olds have made larger gains in
    the past five years than at any point in the
    previous 28 years.
  • In math, 9-year-olds and 13-year-olds earned the
    highest scores in the history of the test.
  • In both reading and math, African American and
    Hispanic students are scoring higher, and are
    beginning to close the achievement gap with their
    white peers.

NCLB Beneficiaries
  • Children, Empowers Parents, Supports Teachers and
    Strengthens Schools.
  • All children are counted under NCLB, and schools
    are responsible for making sure every child is
    learning.
  • Parents are given unprecedented information and
    new options for their children, which may include
    free tutoring.
  • Teachers utilize assessment data and
    scientifically based teaching methods to improve
    classroom instruction.
  • Schools identified as in need of improvement
    receive extra help and resources to raise student
    achievement.
