What is it?

• A CIDR is a vaginal insert that delivers
  progesterone
• Controlled intravaginal drug release
• Induces cyclicity in anestrus beef cows and
  synchronizes estrus
• Can be used to advance puberty

Situation of Case 2

• Beef cattle
• Rancher needs to deliver large number of calves
  w/ same weaning wt. and genetics
• 410 cows
• cycling and anestrus suckling cows
• not enough bulls, must use AI
• Use of CIDR and Prostaglandin

• CIDR (progesterone)

Effectiveness of treatment

• Animal may be anestrous or cycling
• Can be used in virgin beef heifers and postpartum
  beef cows
• Works in cycling, non-cycling, and pre-pubertal
  animals

How to check if it works

• Should be able to detect estrus in 3-4 days after
  removing CIDR
• Client should determine conception rate of the
  herd
• Follow-up with regular preg checks

Labor needs

• Will have to handle all 410 cows at least 3 times
  each
• Insertion of CIDR
• Removal of CIDR Lutalyse injection
• Heat check breed
• Preg check 40 days after AI
• Use of bulls for cleanup
• Will extend calving season
