escort him or her off the campus. Patients will
be re-directed back to their nursing units. - All patients will receive information about the
Smoke-Free Policy at the time of admission.
15How does the new smoke-free campus policy
affects my job?
- A new inpatient protocol is being developed for
medical staff
16Central Themes of the Protocol
- Smoking status identified at the unit and
documented - Admitted patients sign agreement not to smoke
- Nicotine replacement (NRT) offered to all
smokers/standing orders/ patients can only opt
out.
- Acute Care patients are not permitted to leave
the hospital - It is against hospital policy to write an order
permitting a patient to smoke - Patient on NRT discharged with 2 weeks of
nicotine patches
17If you smoke cigarettes
- Smoke off campus, outside the parameters of the
smoke-free campus. - Remember that the property owners surrounding
SFGH are our neighbors. Respect their property as
you would want your property respected. - Properly dispose of litter and cigarette butts.
- If you are ready to quit smoking
- Resources are available to help you quit
- are posted on the CHN page.
18Are there other actions planned to support the
policy and assure compliance?

- Signage posted/large banner will announce policy
- SFSD will re-direct visitors off campus if they
refuse to comply with the smoke-free policy - Patients leaving SFGH with hospital property will
