patients, staff and visitors seriously. Please
follow our non-smoking policy. If you are
interested in taking steps to stop smoking,

14
Implementation - Visitors/Patients
  • Deputy Sheriffs who observe a patient or visitor
smoking on the campus will ask the individual to
extinguish the cigarette, cigar, or pipe.
  • If the visitor refuses to comply, the deputy will
escort him or her off the campus. Patients will
be re-directed back to their nursing units.
  • All patients will receive information about the
Smoke-Free Policy at the time of admission.

15
How does the new smoke-free campus policy
affects my job?
  • A new inpatient protocol is being developed for
    medical staff

16
Central Themes of the Protocol
  • Smoking status identified at the unit and
    documented
  • Admitted patients sign agreement not to smoke
  • Nicotine replacement (NRT) offered to all
smokers/standing orders/ patients can only opt
    out.
  • Acute Care patients are not permitted to leave
    the hospital
  • It is against hospital policy to write an order
    permitting a patient to smoke
  • Patient on NRT discharged with 2 weeks of
    nicotine patches

17
If you smoke cigarettes
  • Smoke off campus, outside the parameters of the
    smoke-free campus.
  • Remember that the property owners surrounding
SFGH are our neighbors. Respect their property as
you would want your property respected.
  • Properly dispose of litter and cigarette butts.
  • If you are ready to quit smoking
  • Resources are available to help you quit
  • are posted on the CHN page.

18
Are there other actions planned to support the
policy and assure compliance?
  • New and updated patient handbook available
  • Signage posted/large banner will announce policy
  • SFSD will re-direct visitors off campus if they
refuse to comply with the smoke-free policy
  • Patients leaving SFGH with hospital property will
be re-directed back to their nursing unit
  • Health promoters will be on campus to educate
smokers and non smokers during June
  • Provide opportunities for staff to communicate
and provide feedback before and after the policy
    is implemented
