Title: How we use land

1
How we use land
2
Growing human population
  • requires resources including space.
  • Most of the resources we need come from rural
    lands (including forests undeveloped areas).

3
3 major uses resources from land?
4
1) Trees
  • needed for paper, lumber, fuel, etc
  • US uses more wood per person than any other
    nation.

5
  • Problem Deforestation (removal of trees from an
    area).
  • 1) loss of habitat
  • 2) increase soil erosion

6
(No Transcript)
7
  • There are 2 methods of deforestation
  • 1) Clear cutting removal of all trees in an
    area.
  • 2) selective cutting removal of some select
    trees from an area.

8
Reforestation
  • replacing trees that have died or been cut down.
  • Required in some areas but not all.
  • Allows the area to regenerate from deforestation.

9
How are forests protected?
  • Not all governments protect the forests.
  • Some governments only protect certain forests.
  • 2) Some cities are opening green spaces these
areas are replanted with trees and other plants.

10
2) Ranching / Farming
  • Increasing human population increase in food
    production.
  • Many developing countries do not have enough land
    for ranching/farming.

11
Problem Overgrazing
  • grasslands are adaptable regrow quickly but
grasslands are being damaged beyond their ability
    to recover.
  • Desertification occurs in the overgrazed areas
when a drought also contributes to the damage.

13
Managing ranches farms
  • limit herd sizes
  • rotate herds from area to area to allow areas
    to regrow
  • replant vegetation in bare areas to protect
    soil
  • have several watering areas

14
3) Mining
  • removal of mineral resources from an area.
  • Minerals include salt, gems, gold, metals, coal,
    etc

15
Types of mining
  • Open pit mining dig a large hole
  • Strip mining large strips of land are removed

16
Negative effects of mining
  • Environmental damage area is cleared of
    vegetation
  • lost habitat
  • land erosion
  • 2) Toxic substances result of the process or
found naturally in the soil (could end up in air
    or water)

17
  • 3) Waste leaves behind a lot of waste, unusable
    soil toxic chemicals

18
Mining solutions
  • Reclamation - old mines are filled in and
    replanted.
  • Recycle reduce the need to mine by
    reusing/recycling minerals
