Fruit in Schools
  • Fruit in Schools (FIS) is a government
initiative that aims to promote the health and
    wellbeing of children in schools
  • FIS uses a Whole School Community Approach
  • FIS focuses on 4 priority areas
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity
  • Sunsmart
  • Smokefree

10
  • Your school has been selected to be a part of
this nationwide programme and is one of only 29
schools in the Waikato to be invited onboard
  • The goals of Project Energize and FIS are
closely aligned and in the Waikato FIS works
    within a Project Energize framework.
  • What do we receive?
  • FIS will provide fresh fruit to each child in
your school each day for 3 years. The fruit is
intended to be in addition to fruit children
    receive from home.
  • What do we have to do?
  • Schools involved agree to work collaboratively
on the 4 focus areas outlined
  • Schools agree to increase parent and community
    participation in FIS related activities

11
Where do we start?
  • School wide Needs Analysis
  • In Physical Activity
  • What are we doing well?
  • What could we improve?
  • In Nutrition
  • What are we doing well?
  • What could we improve?

12
Project Energize Plan
  • With areas of need identified schools may then
select from a menu of possible initiatives,
activities and programmes which meet these needs
  • However we must consider
  • Is the initiative we agree on going to change
attitudes and behaviours around physical activity
    and nutrition?
  • Does the initiative have long-term sustainable
    outcomes?
  • From the identified needs and agreed initiatives
a Project Energize School Plan will be devised.
  • Each school owns their plan and sets their own
    timeframes.
