Current Fire Threat
  • Rainfall in the last six months has been lowest
    for several years
  • USGS report of between 68 - 78 of normal
    rainfall for county
  • Normally our wet season
  • Higher than average fuel loads and lower moisture
    content in those fuels

Wildland Program Outline
  • Developed training and obtained equipment to
    effectively and safely fight wildland fires
  • Wildland Team Program initiated in 2003 with
    approximately 15 members attending Firefighter
    Type 2 level training.
  • Obtained PPE and hand tools for wildland
    environment.
  • Loan of a Model 42 light-engine fire truck from
    the U.S. Forest Service.
  • Cross training engine crews in wildland
    firefighting techniques and safety.

Program Focus
  • Continuing broad based basic to mid level
    training
  • Training of greatest number in basic safety and
    operation practices (S-130, S-190, L-180)
  • Certification for Team members
  • In-house training for all personnel
  • Training of dedicated responders and supervisory
    personnel to a higher level (S-232, S-234,
    S-212, S-215)

Current level of Training
  • Broad department wide operational training
  • Currently 60 firefighters trained to FF Type 2
    level.
  • Awareness level training to all department
    personnel

6 Months of Progress
  • 1/3 of 60 member team trained in S-212, S-232,
    and S-234 during the first two weeks of January
  • 4 Supervisors/Leaders attended S-215 class at
    Firehouse World Expo in San Diego during first
    week of February
  • Negotiation and planning for S-215 class on Maui
    for FFIII and Captains
  • Current recruit class scheduled to receive S-130,
    S-190, L-180 equivalent training in June
